Digital vs Flexographic Printing and Roll vs Sheet Beverage Can Labels FAQ
How overseas buyers should compare digital and flexographic printing together with roll or sheet delivery for beverage can labels.
The short answer: print method and delivery format should be quoted as one production route
For the quantities currently discussed, UGI Packging proposes evaluating digital printing for 8,000 labels and flexographic printing for 200,000 labels. This is not a universal quantity rule. Artwork count, color, plate preparation, press setup, material purchase, lamination, die cutting, waste and labeling equipment all affect the economical route. Automatic applicators normally require roll labels; sheet labels are relevant only when the application method can accept them.
What production route does UGI Packging currently recommend for 8,000 and 200,000 labels?
For the present one-color inquiry, UGI Packging recommends quoting digital printing for the 8,000-piece requirement and flexographic printing for the 200,000-piece requirement. The recommendation is based on the current job assumptions and must be reconfirmed after artwork, material, finish, label size and delivery format are fixed.
Why can digital printing be economical for the smaller requirement?
Digital printing can avoid conventional flexographic plate preparation and may reduce setup exposure for a smaller or multi-design order. It still has its own press, color, material, finishing and converting costs. Digital should not be described as universally cheaper, and modern digital presses are not limited only to very short runs.
Why can flexographic printing be economical for the larger requirement?
Flexographic production uses prepared plates and a repeating web process. When a design, material and setup run over a larger quantity, fixed preparation and startup waste can be distributed across more labels. The actual crossover depends on press configuration, number of colors, coverage, speed, waste, finishing and supplier pricing.
Does one-color artwork eliminate flexographic setup costs?
No. One-color work can simplify the print setup compared with multiple colors, but it can still require a flexographic plate, mounting, ink preparation, registration, startup material and inspection. The quotation should separate or explain these requirements rather than assuming that one color means no setup.
When are roll labels required?
Roll labels are required when the customer automatic labeling machine is designed to feed a pressure-sensitive web. The buyer must provide core size, maximum roll diameter, web width limits, unwind direction, leading edge, gap, labels per roll and any splice restrictions. A roll is not defined only by the number of labels.
When can sheet labels be considered?
Sheet labels can be considered when labels will be applied manually or by equipment that accepts sheet-fed pieces. For the 8,000-piece requirement, UGI Packging can compare a sheet route if the customer application method allows it. Sheet delivery is not suitable as a cost-saving substitute when the production line requires rolls.
Can sheet labels always reduce the cost of an 8,000-piece order?
No. The result depends on the selected material, printing process, lamination, die-cutting method, one-time cutting tool if required, waste, packing and manual application cost. A sheet route may reduce some roll-converting requirements but can add labor or tooling elsewhere.
Why should the 200,000-piece requirement normally be reviewed as a roll-label project?
At that quantity the customer labeling operation becomes a major cost and capacity factor. If an automatic line will apply the labels, the roll specification must match the machine. Flexographic printing and roll converting may form an efficient route, but the supplier still needs the actual line and roll specifications before confirming it.
What cost items should buyers compare between the routes?
Compare material purchase, plate or digital setup, proofing, ink or toner coverage, lamination or varnish, die or rotary tooling, setup waste, production waste, roll slitting and rewinding, sheet cutting, packing, application labor and the effect of quantity. Unit price alone can hide a material commitment or a labeling-line incompatibility.
What sample or proof should be approved?
Approve color and artwork by the proof appropriate to the chosen print route, then approve the final material and converted shape on the actual can. For roll supply, also approve winding and dispensing compatibility. For cold and wet use, printing approval does not replace the finished-label refrigeration and ice-water test.
