China Label Material Purchasing
Why Do Freezer-Grade Beverage Label Materials Have a Minimum Material Purchase Quantity?
An explanation of the raw-material starting quantity behind the Chinese procurement term 包料 for special freezer-grade label constructions.
The short answer: the raw-material purchase threshold can be different from the finished-label quantity
For the current project, the freezer-grade self-adhesive material is not treated like an ordinary stocked label material. The material supplier requires a starting purchase quantity, so the quotation may need to cover more raw material than the exact finished-label requirement. In Chinese converter communication this may be described as 包料. It is a project-specific raw-material commitment, not a universal finished-label MOQ.
What does 包料 mean in this UGI Packging label quotation?
It means the special freezer-grade self-adhesive material has a starting purchase quantity that must be covered for the order. The commercial issue is the raw material needed to obtain that construction, not a claim that every converter or every freezer label has the same minimum.
Is the material purchase quantity the same as the finished-label MOQ?
No. Finished-label quantity is the number of converted labels requested. Material purchase quantity refers to the amount of pressure-sensitive stock that must be bought before printing and converting. Yield, web width, label size, gaps, setup waste and converting waste determine how much of that material becomes acceptable labels.
Why can a special freezer-grade material have a starting purchase quantity?
For this project, the required cold-wet construction must be purchased under the material supplier condition rather than taken as an unrestricted small quantity from ordinary stock. The exact threshold depends on the selected supplier construction and quotation. UGI Packging should state the actual quantity only after the material is confirmed.
Does the higher material commitment mean the freezer-grade option is always more expensive?
No universal conclusion should be made. In the current project the freezer-grade route costs more than the B03 route and requires a starting material purchase quantity. Another order may use a different construction, supplier, width, yield, printing method or quantity. Buyers should compare the actual total quotation and required performance.
Who owns unused material after the labels are produced?
That is a quotation and storage term that must be agreed. Buyers should ask whether unused material is charged, retained for repeat orders, returned where possible, or treated as supplier or converter stock. UGI Packging should not promise ownership, storage duration or future usability unless it is written in the quotation.
Can remaining material automatically be reused for a later order?
Not automatically. Reuse can depend on remaining width and length, adhesive shelf life, storage conditions, liner and facestock condition, the next label dimensions, print route and whether the specification remains unchanged. These points should be confirmed when the original material commitment is quoted.
What should an overseas buyer request in the quotation?
Request the finished-label quantity, material purchase basis, material identification, usable yield assumption, setup and waste basis, treatment of unused material, storage terms, repeat-order conditions and any effect of changing the label size or artwork. This separates the special-material commitment from printing plates, dies and ordinary production setup costs.
Finished labels and special-material purchasing are different quantities
The quotation should identify where each quantity and cost driver originates.
| Quotation item | What it measures | What the buyer should confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Finished-label quantity | Accepted converted labels delivered | Order quantities for each artwork and format |
| Material purchase quantity | Raw self-adhesive stock required by the selected supply route | Starting quantity and charge basis |
| Production yield | Labels produced from the purchased web after gaps and waste | Layout, width, setup and waste assumptions |
| Unused material | Special stock remaining after conversion | Ownership, storage, shelf life and repeat-order terms |
