Blister Packaging Solution

Blister and clamshell packaging are among the most common consumer packaging types — used for toys, hardware, electronics, and more. A plastic sheet is vacuum-formed around a mould to contain the item snugly, attached to a printed paperboard card. Completely transparent clamshell halves allow full product visibility while concealing accessories or internal components.

Blister packaging is an inexpensive option for creating packages that are durable, transparent and tamper-proof. UGI offers a choice of water-based or solvent-based coating on blister cards. Solvent-based coating provides a bond averaging 50% stronger with half the application time — maintaining solid bond coverage around the entire flange whether the blister is PVC, styrene, PET or RPET.

Seal Blister (Cardboard Card)

The most common type — goods such as toys, hardware and electrical items are contained between a specially made paperboard and clear pre-formed plastic (PVC). The transparent plastic is vacuum-formed around a mould so it contains the item snugly. The blister is attached to the card through a heat-sealing process, allowing the product to be displayed in a wide variety of methods.

Clamshell Blisters

For heavier items, clamshell blisters consist of two pre-formed plastic sheets (or one sheet folded over) fused at the edges. Typically used for theft-prone items such as consumer electronics. Joined by high-frequency welding — the resulting joint can only be broken with a knife or scissors, making them ideal for security-sensitive products.

Tri-fold clamshells feature a triangular base that allows the package to stand upright on a shelf, hang on a peg wall or sit in a display. Folding blisters can be closed without special equipment.

Skin Packaging

Skin packaging places the product on a printed paperboard and drapes a thin transparent plastic film over it using heat and vacuum. The film bonds to the heat-seal coating on the paperboard. Similar to a blister pack, but the plastic is formed over the product rather than pre-formed — creating a tight, custom-contoured wrap around the item.
