Offset vs Flexographic Printing for Food Packaging FAQ

The short answer: match the process to the package and production route
Offset and flexography can both produce food packaging, but they use different image carriers, ink-transfer systems and production formats. Selection depends on substrate, structure, graphics, colours, finishing, quantity, equipment and food-use requirements.
How does offset printing transfer the image?
In conventional offset lithography the image transfers from plate to blanket and then to the substrate. Sheetfed presses are widely used for paperboard cartons and labels.
How does flexographic printing transfer the image?
Flexography uses a flexible relief plate and an anilox system to meter ink to the substrate. Equipment may be web- or sheet-based and can combine printing with inline converting.
Which process is better for folding cartons?
Sheetfed offset is common for detailed folding-carton graphics, while flexography may suit particular board, corrugated or web-fed routes. The converter should match the structure and available equipment.
Which process has better print quality?
Neither has a universal quality advantage. Plate imaging, screening, press condition, substrate, ink, registration and operator control determine the achievable result.
Can both print spot colours and process colour?
Yes, subject to press configuration and workflow. Define CMYK, named spot colours, opaque white, varnishes and total station requirements in the artwork and quotation.
How do plates and setup affect cost?
Both require prepress and process setup, but plate type, repeat or sheet format, number of colours, makeready, waste and inline finishing differ. Compare actual routes and quantities.
Does one process always have a lower MOQ?
No. Economical production quantity depends on equipment, substrate, tooling, setup waste, speed, finishing, SKU count and order quantity.
Which process is safer for food packaging?
Process name does not determine safety. Exact inks, coatings, curing or drying, set-off controls, migration pathways and finished-package use must be assessed.
How are barcodes and small text controlled?
Provide final size and magnification, quiet zones, colour separation and substrate details. Verify them on production-representative print using the required barcode and legibility criteria.
What should buyers include in the RFQ?
Provide structure, substrate, dimensions, artwork, colours, coverage, finishes, quantities by SKU, quality targets, food contact, temperature, packing line and delivery requirements.
What sample should be approved?
Approve a proof appropriate to the selected process and a production-representative printed and converted sample for colour, registration, text, barcode, finish and food-packaging controls.
