Soy-Based Ink vs Conventional Petroleum-Based Ink for Packaging FAQ
A practical comparison of soy-based and conventional ink for packaging, with careful boundaries around formulation, VOC, performance, food contact and environmental claims.
The short answer: qualify the complete ink and packaging system
Soy-based describes the use of soybean oil in an ink vehicle; it does not by itself establish the full formulation, printing performance, food-contact suitability or environmental outcome of the finished package.
What is soy-based ink?
Soy-based ink is printing ink formulated with soybean oil as part of its vehicle or carrier system. It still includes other functional ingredients such as pigments, resins, additives and, depending on the ink and process, other oils or solvents. The supplier formulation and printing method are therefore more informative than the word soy alone.
Is soy ink made from 100% soybean oil?
No. Soy ink is not 100% soybean oil, and the soybean-oil share can vary by ink category. The American Soybean Association SoySeal standards use category-specific minimum soybean-oil content rather than requiring the whole ink to be soy. Buyers should request the actual ink declaration instead of interpreting soy-based as a complete ingredient list.
Is soy ink completely free of petroleum-derived ingredients?
Not necessarily. A soy-based vehicle can coexist with petroleum-derived or synthetic resins, solvents, additives and other components. Only a supplier statement for the exact ink series can establish its composition boundaries, so a general soy claim should not be converted into petroleum-free wording.
How does soy-based ink differ from conventional petroleum-based ink?
The main distinction is the oil or vehicle component being compared, but conventional ink is a broad term. Conventional formulations may use mineral oils, other solvents, drying oils, water or radiation-curable chemistry depending on offset, flexographic, gravure, screen, inkjet or other processes. Compare the exact ink series and curing system rather than two simplified labels.
Are all soy inks low VOC?
No. VOC performance depends on the complete formulation, the applicable definition and test or reporting method, not the presence of soybean oil alone. Ink type, solvents, fountain solution, cleaning materials, drying or curing route and press conditions can all affect an overall VOC assessment. Ask for current technical and regulatory documentation for the specified ink.
Does soy ink always dry more slowly or print brighter colours?
No. Drying and colour results are conditional. Pigment selection, resin and vehicle chemistry, ink film weight, fountain balance, substrate absorbency, coating, press speed, dryer or curing system and post-print operations can change both outcomes. A press trial or production-intent sample is more reliable than a general claim that soy ink is always brighter or slower drying.
How do abrasion, adhesion and finishing performance compare?
They depend on the complete ink-substrate-finish system. Rub resistance, adhesion, blocking, overprint varnish, lamination, foil stamping, gluing and other converting steps may respond differently to ink film, cure, surface energy and drying conditions. Buyers should define the finishing sequence and approve relevant production samples rather than assume performance from the oil source.
How do coated paper, white card and kraft paper affect the printed result?
Surface smoothness, porosity, colour and coating change ink holdout, dot gain, drying, density and colour appearance. Coated paper and white card can produce a different visual result from more absorbent or naturally coloured kraft paper even with the same nominal ink. Specify the exact board and surface treatment before colour matching or durability approval.
Is soy ink automatically suitable for direct food contact?
No. Soy content does not establish direct-food-contact suitability. The print location, exact ink components, intended food, time and temperature, migration potential, set-off, curing, barrier layers and destination-market rules must be assessed for the complete package. Direct contact should be used only when supported for that application by appropriate supplier and compliance documentation.
Why do migration, barrier layers and the full package structure matter?
Substances can potentially transfer through a material, through set-off in a stack or roll, or from another layer in the package. A functional barrier, print on the non-food-contact side, suitable curing and controlled converting may reduce exposure, but suitability must be assessed for the intended structure and use. The ink name alone cannot replace a packaging risk assessment.
Does soy ink make packaging recyclable, biodegradable or automatically more sustainable?
No. Soy ink should not be described as biodegradable without evidence, and it does not automatically make the complete package recyclable or environmentally preferable. Substrate, coatings, laminates, adhesives, barriers, ink coverage, local collection and reprocessing systems, product protection and the scope of the environmental comparison all matter. Use qualified claims supported for the finished packaging and target market.
What does a SoySeal claim mean?
SoySeal is a trademark program with standards for qualifying ink categories and rules for use of the mark. A general request for soy ink does not prove that a specific ink, printer or finished package is entitled to use SoySeal. Until the exact ink grade, supplier documentation and trademark conditions are confirmed, no SoySeal claim should be made for UGI Packging.
What ink and food-packaging documents should an overseas buyer request?
Request the technical data sheet, safety data sheet, supplier identification and exact ink series, relevant composition or compliance statements, drying or curing requirements, intended substrate and print-process guidance, food-packaging GMP information, migration or risk-assessment support where applicable, and declarations tied to the destination market and intended use. Verify document scope, date and product identity.
What information should the RFQ include?
State the printing process, colours and coverage, substrate and coating, print side, food type, direct or indirect contact, use temperature and duration, barrier and laminate structure, drying or curing system, varnish, foil, glue and sealing steps, abrasion needs, destination market, claim wording and required documents. These conditions allow the supplier to evaluate an appropriate ink and production route.
