B03 Art Paper vs PP/BOPP Film vs Freezer-Grade Beverage Labels FAQ
A practical comparison of the project-specific B03 art-paper option, film facestocks and freezer-grade wet-service label constructions.
The short answer: compare the complete construction, not only the facestock name
B03, PP/BOPP and freezer-grade are not interchangeable descriptions. In the current UGI Packging project, B03 refers to the quoted art-paper label route and is not recommended for several hours in ice water. A film facestock can resist water better than paper, but its adhesive, finish, application temperature and can surface still determine performance. The freezer-grade option must be identified by a complete specification and tested before production.
What does B03 mean in this beverage-label discussion?
B03 is a confirmed Chinese supplier material model used in the current UGI Packging quotation for an art-paper label construction. Overseas buyers should retain the B03 model in the approved specification together with the facestock, adhesive, liner and surface finish so the Chinese supply route can be matched on repeat orders.
Is a B03 art-paper label automatically waterproof after lamination?
No. Lamination can protect much of the printed face, but it does not automatically seal every cut edge or make the adhesive interface suitable for prolonged immersion. Paper can still be vulnerable where water enters at an exposed edge, and adhesion depends on the actual adhesive, can surface and application conditions.
What is the practical advantage of a PP or BOPP film facestock?
A PP/BOPP film facestock does not absorb water in the same way as an art-paper facestock and can be a strong candidate for chilled beverage labels. It is not a complete performance guarantee. The converter still needs to match the film, adhesive, ink or toner, surface treatment, lamination, liner and die-cutting route to the actual can and labeling equipment.
What does freezer-grade label material mean?
It should mean a defined self-adhesive construction selected for low-temperature application or service and the stated moisture exposure. The term alone is insufficient. Buyers should request the product data sheet, minimum application temperature, service range, facestock, adhesive and any wet-service or ice-bucket limitation.
Is matte varnish the same as a freezer-grade adhesive?
No. Matte varnish is the surface treatment confirmed by UGI Packging for this route, while the freezer-grade adhesive is part of the self-adhesive material construction. The matte appearance and surface protection should be specified separately from the adhesive required for cold and wet service.
Which option is most suitable for several hours in ice and water?
For the current project, UGI Packging does not recommend the B03 art-paper route for that exposure and recommends quoting a freezer-grade wet-service construction. A PP/BOPP construction should also be compared if a matching cold-wet adhesive and converting route are available. Final selection should follow a finished-label test on the actual can.
Is PP/BOPP always cheaper than a freezer-grade specialty construction?
No. Total cost depends on the exact facestock and adhesive, supplier purchase quantity, material width, printing method, surface finish, die cutting, setup waste, roll conversion and order quantity. UGI Packging should compare actual quotations rather than state a universal price ranking.
Can the B03 route still be considered for refrigerated sales without ice-bucket immersion?
It may remain a candidate for the less severe use condition, but suitability still depends on condensation, label edges, application temperature, can surface and the exact B03 construction. The use condition and sample test should be stated in the quotation rather than assuming that refrigerated automatically means suitable.
What should buyers approve before locking the material?
Approve the written construction and a converted sample on the actual can. Confirm visual appearance, print adhesion, edge behavior, wrinkling, peeling and position after the agreed cold and wet exposure. Do not approve only an unprinted raw-material swatch when immersion performance is part of the requirement.
