Glass Packaging Material Claim FAQ
What Is Our 2026 PCR Carton Commitment for Glass Bottle Packaging?
What our 2026 carton target means, what it does not prove and what overseas buyers should confirm for a specific order.
The short answer: our target is specific and must be verified at order level
Our 2026 packaging target is to use cartons containing 10% post-consumer recycled paper fibre. This is a UGI Packging target for the applicable carton supply, not a claim that every component in the complete glass package contains 10% PCR or that the finished package is automatically recyclable, lower-carbon, compliant or environmentally preferable in every market.
What does our 2026 PCR carton commitment cover?
It covers our 2026 target for applicable shipping cartons to contain 10% post-consumer recycled paper fibre. The claim is about the carton fibre specification, not the glass bottle, pump, cap, coating, label, plastic film or every protective component used in the complete shipment.
What does post-consumer recycled paper fibre mean in this context?
It refers to recovered paper fibre from material that has completed its intended consumer use and is then used as an input in paper or board production. Buyers should distinguish post-consumer content from pre-consumer manufacturing scrap and request the terminology required for their own reporting or claim.
Does the 10% target apply automatically to every carton order?
No. A company target must still be confirmed against the actual carton grade, board supplier, strength requirement, availability, print route and destination-market specification for the order. The quotation or approval document should identify whether the offered carton meets the target and what supporting evidence is available.
Does 10% PCR make the complete glass bottle package recyclable?
No. Recyclability depends on the complete construction and the collection, sorting and recycling system available where the package is discarded. Glass, paperboard, pumps, caps, labels, adhesives, coatings and protective films may follow different recovery routes. A recycled-content statement should not be expanded into an unsupported whole-package recyclability claim.
Does the PCR target prove a carbon reduction?
Not by itself. Recycled fibre content is one material attribute, while a carbon conclusion depends on the defined system boundary, material sourcing, processing, transport, pack weight, reuse or recovery route and calculation method. We do not convert the 10% carton target into an unverified carbon percentage.
How should buyers describe recycled content in the United States or Europe?
Use specific, supportable wording that identifies the component and percentage, and review the current rules and guidance that apply in the destination market. Avoid implying that a carton-content statement covers the complete package. European packaging requirements and United States environmental-marketing guidance should be checked for the actual claim, sales channel and date of placement on the market.
What evidence should a buyer request for the carton claim?
Request the carton or board specification, stated PCR percentage, supplier declaration or other available chain-of-supply evidence, the basis used to calculate the percentage and the exact wording intended for packaging or sustainability reporting. If third-party certification is required, identify the scheme and document before quotation rather than assuming it is included.
Can a higher recycled-fibre percentage always replace the current carton?
Not automatically. Carton compression, puncture resistance, moisture exposure, pallet pattern, bottle weight and transport route still need to be satisfied. A change in board furnish can require performance confirmation, especially for heavy glass shipments. Material-content goals and protective performance must be reviewed together.
What should be included in an RFQ for PCR shipping cartons?
Provide bottle quantity and weight, unit protection, carton dimensions, pack count, pallet pattern, shipment route, storage conditions, required board or carton performance, target PCR percentage, destination market, claim wording and required evidence. This lets us review whether the material target and the protective specification can be met in the same carton route.
How to verify a PCR carton specification
Separate the material-content claim from the protective and regulatory requirements of the full glass shipment.
| Claim element | What it means | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| 10% PCR target | Targeted post-consumer recycled paper fibre in the applicable carton | Actual quoted board and supplier evidence |
| Component scope | Carton content only unless another component is named | Exact component and percentage in the claim |
| Recyclability | Separate end-of-life question for the complete construction | Local collection, sorting and recycling route |
| Carbon impact | Requires a defined calculation, not a PCR percentage alone | Boundary, method and supporting data |
| Transport performance | Carton must still protect heavy glass products | Strength, pallet, storage and route requirements |
