Color Specification in Packaging Artwork: What Actually Reaches Press #

Color is where more artwork files fail at handoff than any other category. The research quantifies the stakes clearly: within the first 20 seconds of viewing a product, color commands 80% of visual attention, with form accounting for only 20%. At two minutes, the split moves to 60/40. By five minutes, they equalize at 50/50. What this tells you practically is that color accuracy in production is not a cosmetic issue — it is a primary commercial variable.

The bakery packaging system under review used four distinct color palettes, each tied to an emotional positioning: a fruit-toned palette with high chroma values for the “leisure” theme; purple, amber, and blue for the “emotion” theme representing romance, family warmth, and friendship respectively; a kraft-tone natural palette with red seal accents for the “nature” theme; and red-and-white for the “refinement” theme, targeting a sense of delicate sweetness.

Each of these color relationships creates a specific technical requirement at file preparation:

The kraft-plus-red-seal combination is the one we see cause the most friction in production. Kraft paper has a natural color that shifts between suppliers and even between production runs on the same substrate. If your artwork file specifies red as a CMYK build without accounting for the brown substrate, the red will print darker and muddier than intended. The correct specification is an opaque spot ink — typically a Pantone reference with an opacity modifier call-out — or a white flood coat beneath the red. If this isn’t in the file, the press operator has to guess.

Honestly, most buyers over-specify Pantone matching on secondary colors while leaving primary background colors as RGB fills. That’s backwards. The background color, especially on uncoated or natural substrates, is where substrate interaction causes the most visible deviation. Lock that down first.


Typography and Structural Form: File Preparation Decisions That Drive Print Quality #

Typography in packaging artwork serves four distinct functions, and each function carries a different file preparation requirement. The research categorizes them as: brand identification (logos, brand names), advertising/copy (taglines, callouts), descriptive text (ingredients, instructions), and decorative/graphic text (typographic pattern elements). Each category needs to be handled differently in the handoff file.

Brand and logo text must be converted to outlines before handoff. Without exception. In supplier qualification, we’ve seen three of six sample files arrive with live editable type on critical brand elements — which means any font substitution on the supplier’s end creates a shape change in the logo itself. One of those files had a custom-designed calligraphic character used as a full-bleed background pattern; it arrived as a linked typeface that wasn’t embedded. The entire background element shifted on press.

Descriptive text — nutritional information, ingredient lists, regulatory text — requires minimum size verification against the print process. For offset litho on coated board, 6pt is a workable floor for positive (dark ink on white) text. For reverse text (white out of color), 7–8pt is the practical minimum. For flexo on kraft or uncoated stock, add 1–2pt to both values. If your file contains 5pt reverse text on a dark background intended for flexo printing on kraft paper, it will fill in.

The structural complexity documented in the research — square gift boxes, hexagonal boxes, heart-shaped rigid formats, glass vessel label wraps, kraft tuck-end cartons — each requires that dieline and artwork be kept on separate, clearly labeled layers with no content overlap. Bleed values differ by structure type: a simple flat label needs 3mm bleed; a box with folded flaps needs bleed extended onto the fold area per the dieline, not a flat 3mm application.

The decorative use of Chinese characters as background pattern elements, and the “HEY!” logotype repeated as a full-coverage tonal texture, represent a specific technical challenge: tonal pattern elements must be specified at a precise ink percentage. The research describes these as appearing as “subtle texture or base layer” — but “subtle” is not a press instruction. The file needs to specify the tint value: typically 8–15% for a barely-visible watermark effect, 20–30% for a visible but recessive pattern. Unspecified, a press operator will set it by eye, and it will vary run to run.

The physical finishing layer matters too. The research explicitly lists gravure printing (凹印), foil stamping (烫金/烫银), UV coating, and flocking (植绒) as standard finishing options for this product category. Each of these requires a separate spot color layer in the artwork file with a clearly named callout — not a visual approximation. A gold foil element specified as a yellow CMYK patch in the artwork file will be quoted and plated incorrectly. Structural Design and Print Finishing: Connecting Form to File Specifications #

Packaging form is not separate from the artwork file — it is embedded in it. Every structural format change has a direct consequence for how artwork must be prepared.

The research documents ribbon ties, hang tags, explanation cards, and scratch cards as supplementary elements in the gift box sub-series. Each of these is a separate printed component requiring its own artwork file, its own bleed specification, its own color profile, and its own finishing call-out. Buyers who submit a single “packaging design file” without separating these components create fulfillment problems. A hang tag printed on 350gsm uncoated board with a hot-stamp crown motif needs different file treatment than the corrugated inner tray it sits above.

Most procurement teams don’t realize how much of the file preparation burden has shifted from supplier to buyer in recent years. Platform-based sourcing has made it routine for buyers to submit “design files” — often PDFs exported from Canva or low-resolution screen mockups — and expect suppliers to rebuild production-ready artwork from them. That’s a workflow that guarantees variation. The supplier’s reconstruction of your intent will always differ from your intent unless the specification is explicit. File preparation is not a design task — it is a technical specification task.

For packaging specifically, the translation point is clear: every visual, structural, and finishing element in your design must have a corresponding technical call-out in the production file. Color = ink reference + substrate context. Typography = font as outline + minimum size verified. Structure = dieline on locked layer + bleed per fold line. Finishing = named spot layer + process specification.


Practical Guidance for Buyers #

When you’re preparing packaging artwork for handoff to any OEM manufacturer, the file is your specification document. It is not a visual reference. The distinction matters because a visual reference creates ambiguity — a specification does not.

Start with color. Convert all design colors to their production equivalent before submission: CMYK builds for process-printed elements, Pantone references for spot colors, explicit ink-on-substrate notes where substrate color interaction is a factor (kraft, uncoated, colored board). Do not submit RGB files for print production under any circumstances.

Next, audit your typography. Outline all fonts. Check minimum sizes against the print process — 6pt positive, 7–8pt reverse for offset; add 1–2pt for flexo or uncoated. Verify that background typographic patterns have a specified tint percentage.

Then address structure. Confirm your dieline is on a locked, non-printing layer. Verify bleed extends per the dieline geometry, not as a flat margin. Separate every structural component — main box, insert, hang tag, label, card — into its own clearly labeled file.

Finally, specify every finish. Foil, UV, emboss, varnish, and flocking must each appear as a named spot color layer with a written process description in the file or accompanying tech sheet. Never let a finishing effect exist only as a visual approximation.

At minimum, one file per distinct printed component. For a system with four sub-themes, each containing a main box, insert card, hang tag, and label, that’s a minimum of 16 separate production files — not four. Consolidating multiple components into a single layout file is a common shortcut that creates registration, bleed, and finishing errors during production.

What bleed value should I use for a rigid gift box with a lid and base?

Bleed for rigid box components is not a flat margin — it follows the dieline geometry. The wrap material must bleed past each score line and into the turnaround area at the interior of the box walls. The exact measurement depends on board thickness and wrap method, but a general starting point is 10–15mm of bleed into the turnaround on each panel edge, with a confirmed dieline from the manufacturer before any artwork is placed. Never apply a generic 3mm bleed to a rigid box file without first receiving the structural dieline.
