The right result depends on the paper or film surface, ink system, varnish chemistry, application method, curing route and registration tolerance—not on the finish name alone.

When varnish is the right packaging finish

A flood varnish covers most or all of the printed sheet. It can reduce rubbing and fingerprints, adjust gloss, and give printed colours a more uniform surface. A spot matte varnish covers selected artwork areas, often creating contrast against a glossier printed or coated background. Varnish is less suitable when the surface must later accept adhesive labels, handwriting, coding or another coating that has not been compatibility-tested. Deep folds, heavily textured stocks and very absorbent boards can also make the visual effect less predictable. We therefore review the complete converting route before confirming the finish.

How we set up varnishing in the factory

Our production route may use a printing press with an inline coating unit or a separate varnishing machine, depending on the job. Rollers, coating plates or screens meter and transfer the varnish. UV, heat-assisted or air-drying units may then cure or dry the coating. These are practical production choices: the artwork area, substrate, run format and specified coating determine which equipment route is appropriate.

  1. Prepress review: separate spot-varnish artwork, confirm trapping and keep critical effects away from cuts, scores and glue zones.
  2. Material trial: check wetting, adhesion, colour shift and the required visual contrast on the actual print construction.
  3. Machine setup: set the coating transfer, pressure, registration and curing conditions for the selected system.
  4. Converting check: confirm that coated sheets can be die-cut, folded, glued and packed without cracking, blocking or marking.

Proofing, measurement and acceptance

A digital proof can confirm position and artwork hierarchy, but it cannot reproduce the final coating thickness, gloss or tactile result. For finish approval, a production-material sample is more useful. Gloss can be evaluated visually under agreed lighting and, where a numerical requirement is necessary, with an agreed instrument and geometry. ISO 2813 describes 20°, 60° and 85° geometries for measuring coating gloss; it does not by itself define an acceptable packaging value, so buyer and factory must agree the target and tolerance.

During production, UGI Packaging can inspect registration, uniformity, pinholes, streaks, contamination, gloss variation, adhesion and rub behaviour according to the approved specification. We also check folding and gluing areas because a finish that looks correct on a flat sheet can still fail during conversion.

What to include in a quotation request

  • Box style, open size, finished size and delivery format.
  • Substrate, print colours and any existing lamination or coating.
  • Flood or spot coverage, desired gloss level and reference sample.
  • Artwork files with the varnish layer clearly named as a separate plate.
  • End-use risks such as rubbing, moisture, coding, gluing or tight folds.

The production clock should start only after the structure, material, artwork, finish sample and commercial terms are approved. UGI Packaging will then match the varnishing equipment and inspection plan to that approved construction; capability remains project-dependent because coating compatibility and final performance vary by material and use.

Frequently asked questions

Is spot matte varnish the same as matte lamination?

No. Spot matte varnish is a selectively applied coating, while matte lamination is normally a film covering a larger surface. Their appearance, protection, folding behaviour and cost structure differ.

Can a digital proof approve the final varnish effect?

It can approve artwork position, but not the exact gloss, coating build or tactile result. Use a production-material sample when those properties are important.

Why can varnish crack near a fold?

Possible causes include a brittle coating, heavy film build, unsuitable grain direction, deep scoring or insufficient material compatibility. The full printed and converted construction should be tested.

Does varnish make every package waterproof?

No. A surface coating may improve resistance to rubbing or limited moisture, but it does not automatically seal edges, joints or the entire package, and it is not a waterproof guarantee.
