Holographic packaging is not one finish. It can use stamped foil, transferred foil, patterned film, laminate, or a replicated surface pattern. The correct specification connects the optical effect to the substrate, printed colors, folds, glue areas, approval sample, and intended use.

Choose the construction before choosing the visual pattern. Define whether the effect is a small accent, a large panel, a full surface, or part of an authentication system. Then confirm pattern direction, color shift, overprinting, fold behavior, adhesion, scuff resistance, and the lighting used for approval.

Choose the holographic route by coverage and structure

Use hot foil stamping for controlled accents when the substrate and design suit a heated die. Consider cold foil printing for inline coverage, patterned film or laminate for larger reflective areas, and cast-and-cure when a replicated pattern is required without leaving the carrier film on the surface. None of these routes is automatically best; the package structure and approval target decide.

Separate artwork and finishing instructions

Create a dedicated vector layer for the holographic area. Mark knockouts, overprint colors, pattern direction, folds, cut lines, glue zones, bleed, safe areas, and critical registration. If transparent colors print over a reflective layer, approve the combination on the production substrate because a monitor cannot reproduce the final movement or reflectivity.

Treat decorative and security effects differently

A decorative holographic pattern can attract attention, but it is not automatically an authentication system. WIPO describes authentication technologies as systems that may combine overt, covert, and forensic features. A buyer requiring brand protection should define who controls the image, how it is verified, and how unauthorized copies are handled.

Approve a representative sample

A flat color proof can confirm layout but not the final optical effect. Approve a physical sample for pattern continuity, direction, color shift, foil release, edge definition, adhesion, overprint legibility, fold cracking, scuffing, and die-cut edges. If the substrate, coating, foil, adhesive, or print sequence changes, review whether the old sample is still representative.

Define production start and QC

Release production only after the dieline, material stack, holographic layer, artwork revision, sample or proof, quantity, packing method, and acceptance criteria are approved. Inspection should compare the agreed sample under consistent light and record registration, coverage, surface damage, folds, edges, and glue performance.

Can a decorative hologram prevent counterfeiting?

Not by itself. A security application needs controlled artwork, verification features, supply-chain controls, and a defined authentication method.

Should holographic areas be supplied as vectors?

Yes for most controlled foil and pattern areas. Keep them on a separate layer and identify overprint, knockout, folds, glue zones, and direction.

What should be checked under different lighting?

Check pattern movement, color shift, print legibility, reflectivity, and whether the approved appearance remains acceptable under retail and photographic lighting.

Can the same holographic material be used on every board?

No. Surface coating, porosity, smoothness, folding, adhesive, and converting conditions can change transfer and durability.
