Cold foil printing transfers foil to an adhesive image area without a heated stamping die. It can support fine graphics and inline overprinting, but the result depends on the complete combination of substrate, adhesive, foil, ink, curing, registration, and converting.

Choose cold foil when the press route, coverage, detail, and overprint plan suit the project. Confirm the exact material stack and approval method. It is not automatically cheaper, more sustainable, or suitable for every board or film.
Compare cold foil with hot foil
Cold foil uses a printed adhesive image and foil contact, while hot foil stamping uses a heated die. Cold foil may suit inline coverage and transparent color overprint; hot foil may suit isolated accents or a different edge and impression. Quantity, setup, substrate, detail, and finish decide the route.
Design the foil and overprint layers together
Create separate vector layers for adhesive or foil, white ink where required, transparent overprint colors, varnish, and cut or crease information. Mark knockouts, trapping, folds, glue zones, barcodes, fine type, bleed, and safe areas. Approve how the design looks before and after overprinting.
Control color expectations
Printing transparent color over reflective foil can create many metallic colors, but opacity and viewing angle change the result. ICC color-management guidance is useful for controlling image and output profiles; it does not replace a physical metallic proof because reflectivity is outside a normal screen simulation.

Sample and inspect the complete stack
Check foil coverage, edge definition, pinholes, adhesive spread, overprint color, registration, curing, scuffing, folds, die-cut edges, glue areas, and odor where relevant. A change to adhesive, foil, substrate, ink, or coating can invalidate the previous sample.
