Sensory Coating Production: Application, Drying and Quality Control

Sensory coating production should start from a named formulation family and target sample, not from the undefined term “Emote Coating.” Our production team must match substrate, ink, primer, coating coverage, application method, drying or curing and later processes. Production control focuses on uniform appearance and feel, adequate drying, adhesion, fold behaviour and protection from rub or blocking.

Specify whether the target is smooth soft touch, drag, rubber-like feel, fine texture or coarse particles. Provide the printed substrate, coverage, exclusion zones, later foil or embossing, folds, glue and acceptance sample. Trial the intended stack and begin production only after application, drying and handling conditions are approved.
Define the coating system and target

Identify spot or flood coverage, target gloss, feel, colour interaction and prohibited zones. Use a retained physical master because descriptive words alone cannot control batch-to-batch sensory appearance.
Prepare substrate and print
Board surface, absorbency, ink coverage, cure, primer and contamination affect wetting and adhesion. Confirm that the print is ready for coating and that later layers are compatible.
Keep coating out of glue, seal, code and writing zones unless the exact combination has been tested. Rough, recycled or heavily printed stock may need a trial to achieve uniform feel.
Control application and drying
Application may use an appropriate press coating unit, roller, screen or other qualified method depending on viscosity, coverage and texture. The process name does not prove that every route is available.
The ACTEGA water-based coating drying guidance notes that insufficiently dry water-based coating can contribute to set-off or blocking and that drying depends on absorption and water evaporation. Treat air, heat, pile and speed as project controls, not fixed universal settings.

Cost categories may include formulation trials, plates or screens, setup, drying or curing, reduced speed, interleaving or protective packing, prototypes and inspection.
Approve a production-representative trial
A swatch on another board or colour may not predict the result. Trial the intended ink, board, coating, coverage and process order. Fold, rub and stack the sample, then check later foil, glue or embossing.
Record substitutions and conditioning. If the substrate, ink coverage or formulation changes, review whether the retained master remains representative.
Define production start and QC
Start after artwork, material stack, coating, trial or sample, quantities, packing and acceptance criteria are approved.
Inspection can cover coverage, feel, gloss, uniformity, streaks, pinholes, set-off, blocking, dryness, rub change, cracking, registration and glue-zone condition. Compare under agreed light and handling conditions.
