A soft-touch coating gives printed packaging a low-friction, velvety or rubber-like hand feel without necessarily adding a separate lamination film. The result varies by coating chemistry, substrate, ink coverage, application weight, drying or curing and later converting. Buyers should specify the desired feel with a physical reference and define rub, fingerprint and glue-zone expectations instead of relying on the words soft touch alone.

Choose a soft-touch coating when tactile feel is important and the intended board, print and finishing sequence can support the coating. Compare it with soft-touch lamination by feel, visual density, edge behaviour, scuff exposure, glue compatibility and material construction. Keep it away from glue flaps, codes and high-wear zones unless a representative trial supports the design.

Choose the process from the package

Soft-touch coating can retain a paper-based construction without the same film layer used in lamination, but that does not automatically determine recyclability or performance. Soft-touch film may provide a different visual density and handling surface. Ordinary matte varnish can reduce glare without reproducing the same hand feel.

The finish may be unsuitable where frequent rubbing, oily handling, overprinting, adhesive bonding or direct product contact is expected and no project-specific evidence is available. Dark solid colours often make scratches, fingerprints and coating variation easier to see.

Prepare materials and artwork

Provide the final substrate, ink system, colour build, coating coverage and all later processes such as foil, spot UV, embossing, die cutting and gluing. Separate spot soft-touch areas from print, varnish, cut and crease layers.

ACTEGA lists a water-based soft-touch coating for extra-matte paper and board surfaces and notes that later hot-foil suitability is system-specific. Use supplier technical data and a converter trial for the selected stack rather than assuming every soft-touch coating behaves alike.

Cost categories can include coating selection, drawdown or press trial, plate or blanket preparation, setup, coating consumption, curing, protective packing and additional inspection. Dark colours, spot registration and later finishing can add control work.

Approve a representative sample

A screen rendering cannot communicate tactile feel. A colour proof may approve graphics while using no soft-touch layer, and a hand-applied drawdown may not reproduce production coating weight or cure.

Approve a physical sample on the intended print and board. Handle it with clean and typical-use hands, compare gloss and feel, rub representative areas, fold the package and test any glue or overprint zones. Label substitutes and prototype methods clearly.

Define production start and QC

The production clock should start after artwork, material stack, coating reference, sample or proof, quantities, packing and acceptance criteria are approved. A change to ink, board, primer or later finish can change the feel and may require a new trial.

Inspection can cover uniformity, gloss, feel, colour shift, pinholes, scratches, fingerprints, blocking, cure, coating-to-print registration, fold cracking and glue performance. Tactile acceptance should use an approved master and agreed handling method, not an unsupported universal number.

Prevent common failures

Uneven feel can come from substrate absorbency, ink-film variation, coating lay or cure. Scratches and shiny rub marks can become visible during stacking or transport. Poor gluing may result when coating enters an adhesive zone.

Use defined exclusion zones, test the exact material stack, allow complete drying or curing, select protective packing where necessary and compare first-off sheets with a retained master.
