Label and Sticker Design: Substrate, Adhesive and Artwork Decisions
Label design is both a graphic and engineering task. The artwork must fit the die line, but performance depends on the face material, adhesive, liner, package surface, application method, temperature, moisture, chemicals, removability and required service life.
UGI Packaging manufactures printed labels and stickers in our factory. We prepare production artwork, print, coat or laminate, die-cut, weed, slit, rewind or sheet and inspect the approved construction. Start with the surface and application conditions
Identify whether the label is applied to coated paper, corrugated board, rigid plastic, flexible film, glass, metal, painted wood or another surface. State surface energy, curvature, texture and contamination where known. Application temperature and service temperature are different requirements, and moisture, oil, refrigeration or repeated handling can change adhesive performance.
Decide whether the label should be permanent, removable, repositionable, tamper-evident or washable. A paper face may suit dry cartons; film may be considered where moisture, stretching or transparency matters. No material should be described as compliant, recyclable or suitable for direct contact without project-specific evidence.

Design within the die line and production limits
Keep required text and symbols inside the safe area, extend backgrounds through bleed and protect barcode quiet zones. Fine reverse text, thin borders and metallic or transparent areas should be reviewed against the actual print method and face stock. Roll-applied labels also need the correct unwind direction and orientation.
Regulatory content depends on product and market. For example, the U.S. food-labeling regulations in 21 CFR Part 101 define requirements within their scope; that source does not approve a specific label or replace the buyer’s regulatory review.
Test the complete construction
A PDF proof checks text, graphics, die line and version. A printed sample checks color and finish, while an application test on the real package checks initial tack, edge lift, bubbles, wrinkles, removability and performance after the expected conditioning period.
Production begins after artwork, face stock, adhesive, liner, die line, roll specification, test method and packing are approved. Our QC team checks dimensions, print registration, color, die-cut depth, matrix removal, roll direction, splice limits, count and representative adhesion behavior.
Frequently asked questions
Why must the actual package surface be tested?
Adhesive performance changes with material, texture, curvature, contamination and temperature. A flat sample panel may not represent the real package.
What information is needed for roll labels?
Provide label size, gap, roll direction, core, maximum roll diameter, quantity per roll and whether application is manual or automatic.
Can UGI Packaging choose my regulatory label text?
The buyer should supply and approve required market-specific content. UGI Packaging controls production against the approved artwork.
When is a film label preferable to paper?
Consider film when moisture, transparency, stretching or durability is required, but confirm adhesive, print, finish and end-use evidence for the project.
