A label or sticker is a construction, not just printed paper: facestock, adhesive and liner must work together on the intended surface and through the application method. Specify the container or package material, shape, temperature, moisture, permanence, label direction and delivery format before choosing paper, film, removable or permanent adhesive.

Quick answer

Choose labels by surface and application first, then select facestock, adhesive, print, finish, die cut and winding. Define permanent, removable, freezer, wash-off or repositionable requirements only for the exact use condition. Do not assume a strong adhesive is always better; it may cause application, residue or removal problems.

Define the application condition

Describe the substrate, curvature, seams, surface energy, dust or oil, application speed, storage temperature and expected moisture. Bostik’s labeling guidance shows why container material and wetness are relevant to adhesive choice; project-specific testing is still required.

Choose paper or film facestock by appearance, opacity, flexing, print process and handling. Food, cosmetic, chemical and regulated claims require the exact label construction and destination-market evidence.

Choose delivery and artwork details

State roll or sheet format, unwind direction, core, gap, splice or packing requirements, label pitch and whether automatic application is used. Supply a version-controlled dieline with bleed, safe area, barcode and variable-data layers.

Mark varnish, lamination, foil, spot UV, perforation, rounded corners and any no-adhesive or registration zones.

A useful quotation request includes:

  • container or package surface and dimensions;
  • facestock, adhesive, liner and finish preference;
  • application method, roll direction and delivery format;
  • print colours, barcode, variable data and die shape;
  • environmental exposure and removal or permanence requirement;
  • quantity by version, sample route and acceptance criteria.

Cost categories may include artwork, plates or digital setup, die, adhesive or facestock trials, roll conversion, splices, setup waste, inspection and packing.

Approve the label construction

A PDF approves content and shape but cannot prove tack, peel, residue, curl or application. A blank label on a different container is not representative.

Apply a sample to the intended surface, including seams and curvature. Store and handle it under the relevant conditions, check edge lift and residue, scan codes and record any substitution.

Define production start and QC

Start after artwork, construction, roll or sheet format, sample, quantities, packing and acceptance criteria are approved.

Inspection can cover facestock, print, die completeness, liner cuts, adhesive contamination, roll direction, pitch, winding, barcode readability, placement, edge lift and surface damage. Adhesion limits should be project-specific.

Prevent common failures

Peeling can follow an incompatible surface, contamination, curvature, temperature or adhesive. Curl and flagging can follow liner, winding or die conditions. Incorrect roll direction can stop an automatic applicator.

Reduce risk by testing the intended surface, controlling clean handling, confirming direction and pitch, protecting finished rolls and checking first-off application.
