Choosing Labels and Adhesives for Labels: A Buyer’s Guide
Label adhesive selection should begin with the substrate and service environment, not with a generic permanent or removable description. Our factory reviews the container surface, temperature, moisture, application speed, storage, handling and removal requirement before comparing face material and adhesive as one label construction.
A label can print correctly and still fail in use if the adhesive does not wet the surface, the surface is contaminated, the application temperature is unsuitable or the label is exposed to conditions outside the intended route. These risks should be identified before the quotation and sample stage.
Identify the substrate and surface condition
Tell us whether the label is applied to glass, metal, plastic, coated paperboard or another surface. Provide the curvature, texture, coating, cleanliness and whether the container carries condensation, oil, dust or release agents. Small radii and flexible containers may require a different balance of tack, flexibility and conformability.
If the label is applied over a seam, corner, embossed area or recessed panel, show the actual application area. A smooth flat panel and a curved or textured panel should not be treated as the same substrate during selection.

Match adhesive to temperature and moisture
Cold, condensation, water, ice, oil and heat can change how an adhesive bonds. State whether the label is applied at room temperature, to a chilled container, after filling, or in another controlled process. Also state whether the finished product will remain refrigerated, be exposed to ice water or face repeated wet handling.
Freezer-grade, high-tack, permanent, removable and specialty adhesives each have a different purpose. We do not use a general label description as a performance guarantee for every surface. The final choice should be tied to the substrate, temperature, exposure and acceptance test.
Review face stock, coating and adhesive together
The face material influences flexibility, moisture resistance, print appearance and how the label follows a curve. Paper, PP/BOPP and other synthetic materials can behave differently under condensation or immersion. Coating, varnish or lamination may protect the printed surface, but it does not automatically solve an adhesive or surface-preparation problem.
We review the complete construction, including face stock, ink, surface finish, adhesive and release liner. Roll or sheet format, die-cut shape and packing can also affect the final cost and application route.
Define testing and approval before production
Tell us the exact wet, cold or handling condition that matters. We can then agree what should be checked on the proposed substrate and how the sample will be observed. A short application test may reveal lifting at an edge, poor wetting, wrinkling or loss of adhesion that a dry room-temperature check would not show.

Give the factory the conditions that affect adhesion
A useful enquiry identifies the container material, label size, application temperature, product temperature, storage environment, water or condensation exposure, application method and required removal behaviour. If the container is filled, chilled, frozen or handled soon after labelling, state the sequence clearly.
Our factory uses this information to separate a general material option from a project-specific recommendation. It also defines whether the sample needs observation after application, after cold storage or after a wet exposure condition rather than only at room temperature.
Keep the approved substrate and test condition with the order record. A later change to the container, temperature or handling route can require the adhesive decision to be reviewed again.
