The short answer: match the supplied format to the filling line

Rollstock is normally supplied as printed or laminated web material for form-fill-seal equipment, while finished pouches arrive already formed for manual, semi-automatic or pre-made-pouch filling. The right choice depends on the buyer’s filling machine, product, speed, seal controls, changeover needs and package features.

What is rollstock flexible packaging?

Rollstock is a continuous printed or unprinted web supplied on a roll. The buyer’s equipment forms, fills and seals the package, so web width, repeat length, unwind direction, core, eye mark and sealant layer must match the line.

What is a finished pouch?

A finished pouch has already been converted into a three-side-seal, stand-up, flat-bottom, side-gusset, zipper or other pouch format. The filling operation opens, fills and closes the pouch using the designed top seal, zipper, spout or closure.

Is rollstock always cheaper than finished pouches?

No. Rollstock removes some off-site pouch-forming work but transfers forming and sealing responsibility to the buyer’s line. Total economics depend on equipment, speed, waste, labor, changeover, features, order quantity and validation.

What machine information is needed for a rollstock RFQ?

Provide the machine type, maximum and preferred web width, core size, roll diameter or weight limits, unwind direction, print repeat, eye-mark specification, sealing system, filling speed and any existing approved roll sample.

What information is needed for a finished-pouch RFQ?

Provide pouch style, outside dimensions, gusset, top opening, seal areas, zipper or spout details, filling method, product weight or volume, headspace, closing method and packing orientation.

Who controls the final seals?

With rollstock, the buyer’s form-fill-seal equipment creates the package seals. With pre-made pouches, the converter creates most structural seals and the filler normally creates the final closing seal. Responsibilities and acceptance tests should be defined for both routes.

Can the same artwork be used for rollstock and finished pouches?

Not automatically. The dieline, repeat, eye marks, seal zones, gussets, zipper or spout position and print distortion can differ. Artwork should be rebuilt on the approved production template for the chosen format.

What sample should buyers approve?

For rollstock, a machine trial or representative web sample can confirm feeding, registration and sealing. For finished pouches, buyers should confirm dimensions, opening, filling, closing, appearance and package integrity under the intended process.
