CTP Printing Plates vs Die-Cutting Dies for Custom Food Boxes FAQ
A factory explanation of the two separate preparation charges behind custom printed food boxes: CTP printing plates and the metal die-cutting die.
The short answer: one tool prints the artwork and the other forms the carton
In the current UGI Packging workflow, CTP aluminium plates carry the logo, graphics and colours, while the metal die-cutting die cuts the carton outline and creates the creases, lock-bottom geometry and carrying-handle openings. They serve different production stages and are quoted as two separate cost groups.
What is a die-cutting die for a custom food box?
It is the metal cutting and creasing tool used after printing to form the flat carton blank. For the stated UGI Packging lock-bottom box, the die controls the box outline, panel dimensions, fold lines, lock-bottom parts, carrying-handle openings and rounded corners.
When does UGI Packging need to make a new die-cutting die?
A new metal die is required when the order uses a non-stock custom size or a structural layout that is not already available. Changing the dimensions, lock-bottom geometry, handle position, crease arrangement or outer shape can require a new die.
Why is a handled lock-bottom die more complex than a simple carton die?
In addition to the main box outline and lock-bottom parts, the tool must include the carrying-handle cuts, handle creases and rounded areas. These extra cutting and creasing components increase the amount of tooling work required before production.
Does the die cost change when the order increases from 2,000 to 30,000 boxes?
For the same approved structure in the current UGI Packging quotation route, the one-time die cost is essentially unchanged whether the order is 2,000 or 30,000 boxes. The difference is the allocation: a smaller order carries much more die cost per finished box.
What is a CTP printing plate?
A CTP plate is an aluminium printing plate prepared from the approved digital artwork for the offset-printing stage. It carries the image information for the logo, text, graphics and colour separation. It does not cut the box outline or make the folding creases.
How many CTP plates does CMYK printing require?
A conventional four-colour CMYK job requires four CTP plates in the UGI Packging route: cyan, magenta, yellow and black. Each plate carries the image information for its corresponding colour separation.
Do spot colours require additional CTP plates?
Yes. If the artwork contains separately printed spot colours, each spot colour requires its corresponding plate in addition to the CMYK set or other process plates specified for the job. The quotation should identify the approved colour count before plate making.
Is the CTP plate charge different for 5,000 and 50,000 boxes?
For the same artwork under the current UGI Packging production route, the one-time CTP plate charge is the same whether the order is 5,000 or 50,000 boxes. A smaller order therefore carries more plate cost per box even though the plate-making charge itself does not decrease.
Does every order require CTP plates in the UGI Packging workflow?
A custom offset-printed order requires its printing plates. UGI Packging prepares plates for the production order, and a change to the design, logo or colour separation requires a new applicable plate set and a new plate charge.
Are CTP printing plates and die-cutting dies the same charge?
No. They are completely separate. CTP plates serve the printing stage and control the artwork and colours. The die-cutting die serves the converting stage and controls the outline, creases, lock-bottom parts, handle holes and rounded corners. A custom printed box can require both charges.
Do blank stock food boxes require CTP printing plates?
No. A blank stock box has no custom printed logo or graphics, so no CTP plate charge is created for that blank order. If the buyer adds custom offset printing, the applicable plate-making charge is introduced.
How should a buyer check tooling and plate charges in a quotation?
Ask the quotation to list the die-cutting die and CTP plates separately. Confirm the dieline version, finished size, handle and lock-bottom details, CMYK and spot-colour count, artwork version and the conditions that trigger new tooling or new plates.
