A buyer-focused guide to low-migration ink, direct and indirect food contact, set-off, barriers, GMP, documentation and finished-package verification.
The short answer: specify the intended use and assess the complete printed package
Food-safe ink is too broad to use as a stand-alone requirement. Low-migration ink can be one control for defined food-packaging uses, but buyers must also verify printing position, set-off, substrate and barrier, curing or drying, GMP, food and temperature conditions, and the finished package.
What does food-safe ink mean?
It is an informal phrase unless the supplier defines the ink, printing position, food-contact status, target market and use restrictions. Buyers should replace the phrase with a documented intended-use specification and evidence for the complete printed package.
What is a low-migration printing ink?
It is formulated and manufactured so that potential migration is controlled for specified food-packaging applications when correctly printed, dried or cured and used. The description does not certify every package or every food-contact condition.
Is low-migration ink automatically suitable for direct food contact?
No. Direct food-contact printing needs an ink system specifically supported for intentional contact and the actual food, temperature and duration. An ink intended for the non-food-contact side should not be moved to the inside without separate evidence.
Can ink migrate when it is printed only on the outside?
Yes. Potential routes include transfer through the substrate, set-off when printed surfaces contact food-contact surfaces in stacks or reels, gas-phase transfer, cut edges and package deformation. The structure and production workflow must be evaluated.
Does a functional barrier eliminate ink migration concerns?
Not automatically. Barrier effectiveness depends on the material, thickness, continuity, substances involved, temperature, duration, folds, seams and cut edges. It must be demonstrated for the actual package and intended conditions.
Why do drying and curing conditions matter?
Incomplete drying or curing can leave higher residual levels or change rub and set-off behaviour. Ink film weight, press speed, energy delivery, substrate, maintenance and process monitoring must follow the validated system and supplier instructions.
Are UV, water-based, solvent-based or oil-based inks automatically low migration?
No. Each process family includes different formulations and potential migrants. Suitability depends on the exact product, application, curing or drying, substrate, package design and intended use rather than the broad chemistry label.
What does GMP require from the ink and printing supply chain?
GMP includes formulation controls, raw-material selection, contamination prevention, change control, traceability, printing conditions, curing or drying, storage and communication of restrictions. Correct ink selection is only one part of that system.
Does an ink supplier declaration prove the finished package complies?
No. It supports the converter assessment but normally covers the supplied ink under stated conditions. The finished article also includes paper or plastic, coatings, adhesives, set-off, print coverage and converting, which may require calculation, risk assessment or migration testing.
What ink documents should overseas buyers request?
Request product identification, intended-use statement, applicable regulatory references, restrictions, GMP confirmation, statement of composition or migration-relevant information where appropriate, traceability and change-notification terms. Confirm which party assesses the finished package.
Is low-migration ink always more expensive or limited to a higher MOQ?
No universal rule applies. Ink system, press and curing route, cleaning or segregation, setup, material, testing, waste and quantity affect cost and economical production quantity. Compare quotations for the same package and evidence requirements.
What should buyers include in a food-packaging ink RFQ?
State the full package structure, print side, direct or indirect contact, food type, temperature and duration, stacking or reel set-off risk, barrier, curing route, target market and required documents or tests. Ask UGI Packging to confirm only verified order-specific information.
