Pet Food Bags & Pouches — Material Selection Guide

Direct answer: pet-food bag material selection begins with product format, fat and aroma sensitivity, filled weight, particle shape, package size, closure use and distribution handling. Barrier and mechanical performance must be designed together; a material that protects the product in a flat specimen may still fail at a gusset, handle, zipper or seal.

Dry kibble, treats, supplements, powdered products and other pet-food formats can require different structures. Do not copy a universal thickness, OTR, WVTR or layer sequence from another bag without confirming the actual load and use conditions.

Define product and package stresses #

Design input Why it changes the material What the buyer should provide
Product and fat/aroma sensitivity Influences oxygen, aroma and grease-management needs. Product format, ingredients of concern and intended shelf conditions.
Filled weight and bag dimensions Changes drop, carrying, stacking and seal loads. Net weight, dimensions, headspace and case-packing method.
Particle shape and density Hard or sharp pieces may concentrate puncture and flex stress. Representative product samples and filling behavior.
Handle, zipper and gusset Introduces local stress, sealing and alignment requirements. Feature drawings, carrying use and opening/reclosure expectations.
Distribution route Determines vibration, drop, compression, temperature and humidity exposure. Shipping unit, pallet/case arrangement and expected route.

Assign barrier and mechanical roles separately #

An outer layer may support printing and stiffness; PA, PET or another support layer may contribute toughness; EVOH, metallized film, foil or a coating may provide barrier; and PE, CPP or another formulation may serve as the product-contact sealant. The final structure depends on grades, thicknesses, adhesion and processing, not only abbreviations.

Barrier numbers do not replace product validation #

ASTM D3985 and ASTM F1249 measure oxygen and water-vapor transmission through film or sheeting under stated conditions. These values support material comparison. Finished-package performance also depends on seals, closures, package area, folds, flex damage, product oils, headspace, filling, storage and distribution.

Seal and closure performance must reflect real filling #

Kibble dust, crumbs, fat or powder in the sealing zone can change the result. Confirm sealant, seal width, temperature, dwell, pressure, hot tack and contamination tolerance on the intended equipment. A zipper may support repeated opening, but it does not automatically replace the original primary seal.

ASTM F88/F88M supports seal-strength process control. It should be combined with relevant visual and integrity checks rather than treated as proof of every leak pathway.

Distribution validation belongs in the material decision #

ISTA explains that packaged-product tests should be selected for the intended distribution environment. A laboratory simulation does not guarantee field performance, but it can help compare designs and expose failure modes. Use representative filled bags, cases and pallet arrangements where applicable, then inspect seals, corners, handles, gussets, closures and laminate surfaces after testing.

Do not claim that one drop height, sample count or pass criterion applies to all pet-food bags. Define the protocol from package mass, route, handling system and customer requirements.

RFQ and approval checklist #

  • product format, ingredients of concern, fat/aroma sensitivity and particle shape;
  • net weight, dimensions, bag format, gusset and headspace;
  • handle, zipper, tear notch, slider or other feature requirements;
  • oxygen, moisture, aroma and light needs with stated test conditions;
  • filling method, product temperature and seal contamination risk;
  • case, pallet, e-commerce or retail distribution route;
  • printing, finish, scuff and puncture expectations;
  • food/feed-contact documentation required for the destination market;
  • filled sample, line trial, storage and distribution-validation plan.

In Chinese pet-food packaging procurement, some suppliers may begin with a standard material shorthand or quote a heavier construction without explaining the load path. This is not a universal China-wide design rule. UGI Packging recommends requesting the complete structure, feature drawings and test responsibility in the RFQ. Frequently asked questions #

Does a heavier pet-food bag automatically resist drops better? #

No. Total thickness is only one variable. Layer choice, toughness, adhesion, seals, gussets, handle geometry, filled weight and distribution conditions determine the completed-bag result.

Can a high-barrier film prevent every pet-food quality problem? #

No. Barrier may reduce oxygen, moisture, aroma or light exposure, but seals, closures, filling, product condition, storage and distribution must also be controlled and validated.

Should puncture resistance be checked with the actual kibble or treat? #

Representative product is useful because particle shape, density and movement can create stresses that a flat-film data sheet does not reproduce. The test plan should reflect the intended filled package.

Does a zipper replace the original top seal? #

Not automatically. The zipper is normally a reclosure feature. Define whether the filled bag also requires a separate primary heat seal and how both closures will be inspected.
