Barcode Printing for Packaging: Data, Artwork and Verification
Reliable barcode printing begins with authorized data and a correctly generated symbol, then depends on size, quiet zones, contrast, substrate, print process and final placement. A barcode that looks sharp on screen can still fail after scaling, plate gain, lamination, curvature or low-contrast color choices.

Define the barcode system and data owner
The buyer must state the symbology, encoded value, responsible numbering organization and intended scanner environment. Retail point-of-sale, logistics, internal inventory and consumer QR applications have different data and verification requirements. UGI Packaging should not invent, reassign or correct commercial product identifiers without written authorization from the data owner.
Supply the barcode as a vector file or through an agreed generation method. Screenshots and low-resolution raster images can distort bars or modules. The artwork record should show the human-readable value, orientation, final size and a non-printing note that identifies the protected quiet-zone area.

Protect contrast, dimensions and placement
Dark bars on a light, uniform background are the safest starting point. Metallic inks, transparent materials, strong patterns and certain color combinations can reduce scanner response even when the symbol is visually attractive. Curved containers can also distort the apparent width, so placement direction and diameter must be considered before artwork approval.
Lamination, varnish and abrasion protection may improve durability, but glare, texture or registration movement can affect scanning. The barcode should be assessed on the actual production substrate and finish, not only on an office printout.
Proofing and verification are different checks
A PDF proof confirms content, value, position and visual size. A physical proof or production sample is needed to evaluate substrate, ink behavior, finish and curvature. A handheld scan confirms that a particular scanner can read the code; formal verification measures symbol quality under a defined method.
GS1 explains that printed barcode quality is measured with a verifier and graded against the relevant standard in its barcode quality guidance. If a formal report is required, the purchase specification must identify the symbology, method, minimum grade and who will issue the report before production begins.
Factory QC and common failure causes
Our printing and QC teams compare the encoded value and placement with approved artwork, monitor print clarity, and check representative finished pieces using the agreed acceptance method. Common failures include artwork scaling, inadequate quiet zones, low contrast, plate or ink spread, damage across the bars, coating glare and placing a symbol too close to a fold or seam.
The production clock should start after final data, artwork, material, finish, verification requirement and signed proof are approved. Any later barcode-value change is an artwork revision and must be controlled as a new version.
Frequently asked questions
Can UGI Packaging create the product number inside my barcode?
The buyer or authorized numbering organization must supply and control the commercial identifier. UGI Packaging can generate or place the symbol from approved data, but should not invent the number.
Is scanning with a phone enough to approve a barcode?
It can be a useful practical check for a QR code, but it is not the same as formal barcode verification. Define the required scanner environment and grade before ordering.
Should a barcode be supplied as a vector file?
Usually yes. Vector artwork protects bar or module geometry when the symbol is placed at its approved physical size.
When should the barcode be checked physically?
Check it on the actual substrate and finish whenever coating, texture, transparency, curvature or print gain may affect scan performance.
