Anti-Counterfeit Packaging Features: Selection and Verification

Quick answer: Anti-counterfeit packaging works best as a layered system chosen from a product-risk assessment. Choose the feature by authentication task

A visible feature such as a holographic foil, colour-shifting effect or complex embossed mark helps retail staff and buyers perform a quick first check. A covert feature such as UV-reactive print requires a defined inspection tool. A serialized QR code or other machine-readable identifier can connect the physical package to a controlled database. These functions are different; adding more decoration does not automatically improve security.

A practical three-layer specification

  • Visible layer: a feature that can be explained to legitimate users without special equipment.
  • Controlled layer: a covert or forensic element reserved for trained inspectors or laboratories.
  • Data layer: a unique or batch identifier with ownership, activation, query limits, logging and exception rules.

ISO 22383:2020 describes general principles for product-fraud risk and countermeasures. Its scope is useful because it treats authentication as a risk-management decision rather than prescribing one universal technology. It does not certify a specific package or guarantee that a feature cannot be copied.

How UGI Packaging converts the security design

Our packaging route may combine offset or digital printing, security inks, foil or holographic application, embossing, die-cutting and controlled variable-data printing. UV inspection lamps, barcode or QR verification devices and camera checks can be included where the approved specification requires them. RFID or NFC components may also be integrated through qualified technology partners when the project requires electronic authentication; the chip, software platform and data service are not implied to be manufactured by UGI Packaging.

Production control starts with artwork separation and access permissions. Security layers should not be distributed in ordinary artwork packages without a reason. For serialized work, the brand or platform owner supplies an approved data range and rules for duplicates, rejects, reprints and unused codes. We then need a reconciliation method so damaged pieces and replacement quantities do not create uncontrolled identifiers.

Sampling and quality checks

A visual sample checks feature position, contrast and interaction with the graphics. A functional sample must also be scanned or inspected with the actual authorized tool and connected environment. Acceptance can include foil registration, emboss depth, UV response, code grade or readability, uniqueness, database response, tamper evidence and destructive opening behaviour. The exact tests depend on the chosen system.

Is a holographic foil enough to stop counterfeiting?

No. It can be a useful visible check, but it should be selected within a broader risk-based system and supported by controlled artwork, inspection rules and, where needed, covert or digital layers.

Can UGI Packaging print unique QR codes?

Variable codes may be integrated when the data source, format, ownership, verification route and reject-reconciliation process are approved for the project.

Who owns the authentication database?

That must be defined contractually. It may be the brand, an authorized platform provider or another nominated party; printed code production does not by itself include database ownership.

Should anti-counterfeit features be shown in normal artwork proofs?

Only to the extent needed for approval. Sensitive layers, code ranges and master files should have defined access and release controls.
