OEM and ODM describe who provides the starting specification; they do not replace a technical brief. In an OEM route, the buyer usually supplies the structure, dimensions and artwork requirements. In an ODM route, the supplier develops more of the concept or structure from the product and use conditions. For a foldable gift box, both routes still require controlled dielines, materials, samples and acceptance records.

Choose OEM or ODM by responsibility

Use OEM when the buyer owns a production-ready specification and needs controlled execution. Use ODM when the product and commercial brief are known but the structure or presentation still needs development. Write down who approves dimensions, creates the dieline, checks intellectual-property rights, supplies copy and barcodes, selects materials, provides regulated-use evidence and signs off the sample. ODM does not transfer every legal or product-safety responsibility to the packaging supplier.

Select a structure that survives assembly and use

Compare folding magnetic boxes, ribbon-tie structures, self-locking constructions and other collapsible formats by assembly time, corner stability, closure, board exposure, insert retention and packed volume. A structure is unsuitable if collapse lines damage the wrap, magnets or tapes interfere with packed goods, the insert cannot retain the product, or repeated setup makes corners lose alignment. Test the intended board, wrap and adhesive system rather than approving geometry alone.

Prepare dielines and artwork

Use separate layers for cut, crease, fold, glue or tape, magnets, ribbons, insert, print, foil, embossing and coating. Mark the viewing side, wrap joins, grain direction, hidden panels, safe areas and critical registration.

If corrugated inserts or shipping cases are included, the FEFCO corrugated design code can provide standardized corrugated style references. It does not name or validate a wrapped rigid gift-box construction, so identify the actual collapsible structure in drawings and samples.

Send complete quotation inputs

A useful RFQ includes:

  • product size, weight, orientation and insertion method;
  • assembled and collapsed box dimensions;
  • board, wrap, insert, closure and accessory requirements;
  • artwork, colour references and finishing layers;
  • quantity by size, artwork and delivery destination;
  • sample route, assembly packing and acceptance criteria.

Cost categories may include structural development, sample materials, dies, wrap and insert tooling, magnets or accessories, setup, hand assembly, protective packing and inspection.

Approve samples in stages

A white structural sample can confirm dimensions, folding and product fit. A printed prototype can show layout and approximate appearance but may use substitute production routes. A representative finished sample should be assembled, collapsed, reopened and packed with the product.

Record sample substitutions, closure strength, corner alignment, scuffing, wrap lifting, insert fit and packing method. If dimensions, board, wrap, accessories or finish change, the old sample may no longer be representative.

Define production start and QC

Release production only after the dieline, material stack, artwork, accessories, sample or proof, quantities, assembly method, packing and acceptance criteria are approved.

Inspection can cover flat and assembled dimensions, squareness, panel alignment, closure, magnet polarity where used, ribbon or accessory position, wrap joints, bubbles, scuffs, foil or emboss registration, insert fit and carton packing.

Our engineers confirm project-specific materials, tooling and acceptance limits without shifting UGI Packaging’s manufacturing responsibility to an outside factory.

What is the practical difference between OEM and ODM packaging?

Can a collapsible box be approved while flat?

No. Erect it, pack the intended product, operate the closure and repeat the collapse-and-assembly sequence.

Does a magnetic closure guarantee secure transport?

No. Magnet position, board, product load, opening direction and outer packing all affect performance.

Can the same tooling be reused after a size change?

Usually not without review. Size, board, wrap, insert and accessory positions can change the required tools and setup.
