The short answer: agree measurable project-specific criteria
There is no universal tolerance for every handmade rigid box. Buyers should define critical dimensions, measurement conditions, lid and insert fit, wrapping and cosmetic limits, approved samples and lot-inspection rules for the actual construction.
Is there one standard tolerance for all handmade rigid boxes?
No. Box size, board and wrap thickness, construction, wrapping route, inserts, closures, finishes and conditioning affect achievable variation. Require a project-specific drawing and inspection agreement.
Which dimensions should a buyer control?
Identify the dimensions that affect product fit, lid fit, insert location, closure, retail display and secondary packing. Define datum points, measurement method and whether the value applies before or after assembly.
Why can outside and inside dimensions vary differently?
Board, wrap, lining, adhesive and turn-ins build up through the structure. Outside consistency does not guarantee identical usable cavity size, so both functional interfaces may need control.
How should lid-and-base fit be specified?
Define engagement depth, clearance, removal force or practical opening expectation, reveal and alignment using the final materials and finishes. Terms such as tight or premium are not measurable specifications.
What cosmetic details need written criteria?
Examples include corner alignment, wrap joints, turn-ins, exposed board, bubbles, wrinkles, glue marks, scratches, scuffs, dents, foil position and visible colour variation. Classify importance by viewing area and function.
Does handmade production mean buyers must accept random defects?
No. Manual operations can add variation, but workmanship still needs agreed limits, reference samples and inspection rules. Separate acceptable process variation from functional or visually unacceptable defects.
Can AQL be used as the tolerance?
No. AQL-based sampling helps decide whether to accept a lot by attributes. It does not define dimensional limits, guarantee every unit or replace clear defect classifications.
How should colour and surface finish be judged?
Use approved physical standards, identified materials, controlled lighting and stated viewing distance. Instrument readings may support colour control, while texture, gloss and tactile appearance still require agreed visual criteria.
Do inserts and closures need separate tolerances?
Yes. Insert cavities, product clearances, magnet or ribbon position, hinge movement and accessory placement create their own tolerance stacks. Test the assembled package with the real product.
What should a golden sample represent?
It should represent the approved construction, materials, dimensions, artwork, colour and finishes and be uniquely identified. Record any known deviations rather than treating an unmarked sample as a complete specification.
What should buyers confirm before mass production?
Approve the technical drawing, critical dimensions, defect catalogue, colour and finish standards, golden sample, sampling plan, measurement conditions, packing method and process for handling nonconforming units.
