Greaseproof paper and coated paperboard are broad material categories. Buyers should compare the exact grade, barrier construction, stiffness, folds and seams, food temperature and holding time, food-contact evidence, target test method and finished-package performance.

What is greaseproof paper?

It is paper engineered or treated to resist penetration by oils and fats. Fibre refining, density, surface treatment and additives can differ by grade, so the name does not identify one composition, grease rating or food-contact status.

What is coated paperboard for food packaging?

It is paperboard combined with a functional coating or film to provide selected surface or barrier properties. Board construction, coating chemistry, coat weight, coated side and converting route must be specified.

Which material resists grease better?

The answer depends on the exact grades and test conditions. A TAPPI kit rating can compare resistance to specified grease mixtures on a sheet, but temperature, contact time, folds, edges and real food can produce different finished-package results.

Does grease resistance also mean the package can hold free liquid?

No. Oil resistance and containment of water, sauce or other free liquid are different performance questions. Seams, corners, cut edges, closures and orientation must be included in a separate complete-package leak protocol.

Which option provides more structural strength?

Material category alone cannot answer that. Grade, caliper, density, moisture, grain direction, box geometry and product load determine stiffness and shape retention. Compare the exact construction and test it with the intended product.

How do hot food and long holding times affect the choice?

Heat can change oil viscosity, moisture movement, board stiffness, coating behaviour and adhesive bonds. Specify fill temperature, holding and delivery time, vents and expected orientation, then evaluate the complete package under those conditions.

Can printing, folds and glue seams reduce barrier performance?

Yes. Scoring, folding, abrasion, cut edges, pinholes, glue areas and vents can interrupt or stress a barrier. A flat-sheet result should not be treated as proof for a printed and converted box.

Are both materials automatically suitable for direct food contact?

No. Suitability depends on fibres, treatments, coatings, additives, inks, adhesives, food type, temperature and duration. Request documentation for the exact material stack and intended use, and distinguish raw-material evidence from finished-package evidence.

Does greaseproof paper mean PFAS-free, plastic-free or compostable?

No. Those are separate composition or end-of-life claims that require definitions and evidence. Ask for the relevant chemical statement and complete-package assessment rather than infer a claim from the grade name.

Is one option always cheaper or available at a lower MOQ?

No universal comparison applies. Paper grade, coating route, material format, print and converting setup, yield, waste, testing and order quantity affect cost and economical production quantity. Compare matched performance specifications.

What should buyers include in the RFQ and sample test?

State the food, oil and free-liquid exposure, fill temperature, holding time, direct or indirect contact, box geometry, coating side, printing, target market and claim requirements. Approve production-representative packages using defined grease, leak and food-contact evidence.
