How Should Buyers Test Grease and Leak Resistance?

A buyer guide to separating material grease tests, water absorption, seam leakage, seal strength and finished-package use tests.

The short answer: define the failure mode before choosing a method

Grease resistance and leak resistance are not the same property. Buyers should define the food, temperature, time, fill level, orientation, seams and distribution hazards, then test both material and production-representative finished packages with agreed criteria.

Is a grease-resistance test the same as a leak test?

No. A sheet may resist oil penetration while a finished box leaks through a seam, corner, lock or cut edge. Test the failure mode that matters.

What does ISO 16532 evaluate?

Its parts provide methods for aspects of grease resistance in paper and board, including permeability or surface repellency. Select the applicable part and report exact conditions.

Does a kit rating prove a food box is leak-proof?

No. A surface repellency result is not a complete-package claim and may not represent hot oil, sauce, folds, abrasion, long contact or distribution.

Why should creased material be tested?

Creasing and folding can disrupt fibres, coatings or barriers. Where the method permits, compare representative creased and uncreased areas and test the converted package.

How should seams and locks be evaluated?

Orient the package so the intended liquid or grease challenges actual glued seams, corners, tabs and locks for the specified time and temperature. Record location and mode of failure.

Can ASTM flexible-package leak methods be used for paper cartons?

Only when specimen type, closure and method scope are technically applicable. Do not copy a flexible seal or medical-package method onto an incompatible carton.

How do hot food and cold food change testing?

Temperature changes viscosity, pressure, board stiffness, coating and adhesive behaviour. Define fill and hold temperature, cooling or refrigeration cycle and contact duration.

Should transport be included?

Yes when movement, vibration, stacking, tilt or drops can expose seams or cause splash. A static bench test may not represent delivery.

What should pass/fail criteria include?

Define visible staining, breakthrough, dripping, mass loss, seam opening, wicking distance, carton deformation and any product-quality limit before testing.

What samples should buyers use?

Use traceable production-representative material and converted packs, conditioned as specified. Agree sample count, controls, fill medium and whether actual food or a justified simulant is required.

Does passing a leak test prove food-contact compliance?

No. Physical containment and food-contact safety are separate. Maintain the applicable material, migration and GMP documentation.
