EXW vs FOB vs DDP for Custom Packaging Orders
A practical comparison of delivery obligations, cost visibility and buyer checks when quoting custom packaging under EXW, FOB or DDP.
The short answer: compare responsibility, not just the quoted total
EXW, FOB and DDP allocate delivery tasks, costs and risk differently. A usable packaging quotation must state the exact Incoterms rule, named place or port, edition, shipment assumptions and all inclusions and exclusions.
What do Incoterms rules cover in a packaging order?
They allocate specified delivery obligations, costs and risk between seller and buyer. They do not by themselves set payment terms, transfer of title, product specifications, compliance responsibility or remedies for breach.
How should an Incoterms rule be written in the contract?
State the three-letter rule, a precise named place or port, and the edition, for example Incoterms® 2020. Avoid using only EXW, FOB or DDP without a location.
What does EXW mean for an overseas packaging buyer?
The seller makes the goods available at the named place with limited delivery obligations. The buyer generally arranges collection and onward transport, but export-clearance practicality and local legal requirements must be checked.
What does FOB mean?
FOB is a sea or inland-waterway rule. The seller delivers the goods on board the nominated vessel at the named port of shipment, with risk transferring according to that rule.
Is FOB always suitable for containerised packaging shipments?
No. ICC guidance notes that FCA may better reflect many container movements because the container is often handed to a terminal or carrier before it is loaded on board. Confirm the actual handover point with the forwarder.
What does DDP mean?
DDP places extensive delivery and import-clearance obligations on the seller up to the named destination, while unloading is generally for the buyer. Destination tax, registration and importer-of-record rules can limit whether it is workable.
Does a DDP quote guarantee that no other charge will arise?
Do not assume that it does. Confirm duties, taxes, customs brokerage, inspections, storage, demurrage, remote-area delivery, unloading and charges caused by buyer delay or incorrect information.
Why can EXW, FOB and DDP prices not be compared line by line?
They include different transport stages and obligations. Normalize product price, origin handling, export clearance, main freight, insurance, destination charges, duty, tax and final delivery before comparing landed cost.
What shipment data affects a packaging freight quote?
Packed quantity, carton count, outer dimensions, gross and net weight, palletisation, stackability, pickup address, port or airport, destination postcode, delivery access and shipment date all matter.
Who should verify customs value, tariff classification and taxes?
The contracting parties should confirm responsibilities, while the buyer should obtain destination-specific advice from a qualified customs broker, freight forwarder and tax or legal adviser.
What should buyers request before accepting a shipping term?
Request a written scope with the exact rule and place, packing data, route, validity period, included and excluded charges, insurance position, document responsibilities and the party handling export and import formalities.
