Two 300gsm Sheets Mounted Together vs One 600gsm Board
A practical guide for overseas buyers comparing double-ply mounted paperboard with one-piece heavyweight board for takeout, bakery and premium food boxes.
The short answer: similar GSM does not mean the same board
Two 300gsm sheets mounted together and one 600gsm sheet should not be treated as interchangeable specifications. The mounted option is a bonded two-layer construction; the other is requested as one mill-made sheet. The correct choice depends on finished caliper, stiffness, printing route, crease performance, food-contact requirements, price and the approved box sample.
Are two 300gsm sheets mounted together the same as one 600gsm board?
No. The nominal paper weight is similar, but the construction is different. Two 300gsm sheets mounted back-to-back form a double-ply structure with an adhesive layer, while a one-piece 600gsm board is made as one mill-produced sheet. Their finished caliper, stiffness, folding behaviour, surface quality and total grammage can therefore differ.
Does mounting two 300gsm sheets produce exactly 600gsm finished board?
Not necessarily. The two paperboard sheets contribute 600gsm before mounting, but the adhesive also adds material. Moisture and process variation can affect the measured result. One published mill example is rated at 610gsm for a back-to-back pasted construction made to provide two outward printing surfaces. Buyers should specify the acceptable finished grammage and caliper instead of assuming the result will be exactly 600gsm.
Is 2x300gsm mounted paperboard always stiffer than one-piece 600gsm board?
No universal rule applies. A mounted structure can gain substantial bending stiffness from its combined thickness and bonded layers, but the result depends on the grade, caliper, fibre composition, grain direction, adhesive coverage, moisture balance and mounting quality. Published mill data can illustrate the composite effect, but the assembled box sample and MD/CD stiffness values should decide the project.
Does 300gsm paperboard have a standard thickness?
No. GSM measures mass per square metre; it does not define thickness. Different 300gsm grades can have different bulk, density and caliper, which changes stiffness and press compatibility. For a mounted structure, obtain the caliper of each sheet and the measured final caliper after mounting. Do not approve the construction from GSM alone.
Is one-piece 600gsm food-packaging board commonly available?
Availability is grade-, mill- and supplier-specific. Many mainstream folding-carton ranges are published below 600gsm, while some high-grammage products are supplied as pasted or mounted grades. Specialist one-piece 600gsm material may still be available, so an overseas buyer should ask for the mill, exact grade, technical data sheet, construction type, minimum order quantity and current lead time rather than relying on the description "600gsm white board."
Which construction is easier to print: 2x300gsm mounted board or one-piece 600gsm board?
It depends on the production route and the press. In a mounted construction, each 300gsm sheet can be printed and surface-finished before mounting, which can avoid feeding the completed thick board through the printing press. If the finished mounted board or one-piece 600gsm board must be printed after construction, the measured caliper, flatness and the press feed limit are more important than GSM alone.
Which construction is less likely to crack or fail at the folds?
Neither construction is automatically crack-free. Thick one-piece board may require wider creasing channels, multiple creases or scoring, while mounted board can develop curl, edge separation or delamination if moisture, adhesive, grain direction or crease settings are poorly controlled. The reliable method is to die-cut, crease, fold and assemble a production-equivalent sample with the final printing and coating.
Can mounted paperboard provide smooth printing surfaces on both sides?
Yes, if the two sheets are selected and mounted for that purpose. Two suitable single-coated sheets can be mounted back-to-back with their uncoated backs bonded together and their coated surfaces facing outward. This can provide a controlled exterior and interior printing surface. It is not an automatic property of every 2x300gsm construction, so both outward surfaces must be specified in the RFQ and approved sample.
Is 2x300gsm mounted paperboard automatically suitable for direct food contact?
No. Food-contact suitability applies to the completed packaging system, not GSM or paperboard alone. The selected boards, adhesive, ink, coating, barrier layer, intended food, contact time and temperature must be reviewed together. For hot, oily or moist food, the project may require an appropriate approved barrier. Buyers should request documentation for the exact construction and intended destination market.
Is 2x300gsm mounted board cheaper than one-piece 600gsm board?
Not always. The answer depends on local material availability, sheet size, mounting adhesive, labour, spoilage, print sequence, order quantity, minimum order requirements and lead time. Standard 300gsm sheets may be easier to source for some projects, but the additional mounting operation has a cost. UGI Packging recommends comparing quotations for the complete approved construction rather than comparing paper price per tonne alone.
What should an overseas buyer include in the RFQ?
Specify whether the board must be double-ply mounted or one-piece mill-made, the exact grade of every layer, GSM, individual and finished caliper, grain direction, outward surface requirements, final box dimensions, product weight, stacking requirement, printing and coating, crease and fold test, direct or indirect food contact, intended food and temperature, required supporting documents, quantity, destination market and an approved assembled sample.

How to choose the construction
Do not approve a food box by the phrase “600gsm” alone. Compare the complete specification:
- Construction: two sheets mounted back-to-back or one-piece mill-made board
- Dimensions: individual sheet caliper and final mounted caliper
- Performance: MD/CD stiffness, stacking requirement and assembled-box test
- Conversion: print route, surface finish, grain direction, die-cut and crease result
- Food contact: the complete board, adhesive, ink, coating and barrier system
- Commercial terms: MOQ, complete conversion cost, spoilage allowance and lead time
The safer purchasing decision is based on construction + finished caliper + MD/CD stiffness + crease test + food-contact system + approved assembled sample.
