Direct answer: select snack packaging from the product’s dominant failure risk, not from the snack category name alone. Moisture gain or loss, oxygen exposure, oil and aroma, light, sharp product edges, crumbs in the seal, package format and distribution handling can lead to different material structures.
A crisp snack, oily nut mix, confectionery item, baked product and powdered seasoning do not automatically share the same barrier or sealant requirement. Start with the product, filling process and intended shelf conditions.
Identify what would make the snack unacceptable #

Compare complete structures, not isolated material names #
PET, BOPP, PE, CPP, PA, EVOH, metallized film, coated film and foil can serve different layer functions. The useful comparison is the declared layer sequence, grades, thicknesses, treatment, adhesive, sealant and converting route. A transparent window may help product visibility but changes the local barrier and mechanical construction. Metallization or foil may improve light control, while flexing, pinholes, folds and sealing still need evaluation. A paper appearance layer can affect printing and stiffness but does not by itself establish moisture protection or recyclability.
Barrier data is a screening tool #
ASTM D3985 and ASTM F1249 measure oxygen and water-vapor transmission through film or sheeting under stated conditions. Use them to compare candidate specimens. Do not convert one material value directly into a universal snack shelf-life claim.

The sealant must match the filling environment #
Crumbs, powder, salt, sugar or oil can enter the seal area. Confirm seal geometry, contamination risk, temperature, dwell, pressure, hot tack and line speed with representative product conditions. A clean laboratory seal does not automatically represent a commercial snack line.

Format and features change the material decision #

RFQ and sample approval #
- snack type, ingredients, oil/aroma sensitivity and sharp edges;
- net weight, package format, dimensions and headspace;
- target failure endpoint and intended shelf conditions;
- oxygen, moisture and light requirements with test conditions;
- filling line, product temperature, gas flushing and seal contamination;
- zipper, window, tear notch, hang hole or other features;
- printing, finish and scuff requirements;
- food-contact destination market and required documentation;
- sample type, line trial and completed-package storage plan.
In Chinese snack-packaging procurement, some suppliers may begin with a familiar structure and quote by bag size and quantity. This is not a universal China-wide material rule. Frequently asked questions #
Do all dry snacks need the same moisture-barrier structure? #
No. Product moisture, desired texture, ingredients, package size, storage humidity, seals and shelf-life endpoint differ. Compare candidate structures for the actual product and conditions.
Does a transparent window automatically cause package failure? #
No, but it changes the local construction and may affect barrier, stiffness and light protection. Its size, position and surrounding laminate should be included in sample and shelf-life validation.
Can a zipper keep a snack fresh without a primary heat seal? #
Not automatically. The zipper supports reclosure after opening, while the original pack may require a separate primary seal. Define both functions in the packaging specification.
Can WVTR alone predict when a snack will lose crispness? #
No. WVTR supports material comparison under stated conditions. Product moisture behavior, package area, seals, headspace, storage and the acceptable texture endpoint must also be evaluated.
