“Double Dimension” is not a sufficient production specification. If the intended result is a package with layered visual or tactile depth, name the actual processes: print, foil transfer, embossing or debossing, spot gloss, matte coating, textured coating, lamination or die-cut windows. Each layer changes artwork, setup, registration, material compatibility and approval needs.

Quick answer

Begin with the visual hierarchy and viewing conditions, then choose the fewest processes that create the required contrast. Supply separate vector layers, define process order and clearances, and approve the finish on the intended board. Avoid placing raised, brittle or highly reflective elements across folds, glue zones, codes or small text unless tested.

Translate the design name into real processes

A layered effect may combine a printed base with foil and embossing, a matte laminate with spot gloss, or a flat colour with a textured coating. The KURZ decoration-process overview presents embossing, hot stamping and related decoration as separate process families. It does not recognize “Double Dimension” as one universal technology.

Write a finish schedule that names each layer, coverage, viewing side and relationship to print, cuts, folds and glue. This makes the result quotable and prevents different suppliers from interpreting a mood-board label differently.

Choose physical depth or optical contrast

Embossing and debossing form the substrate and may leave reverse-side effects. The debossing and embossing finish guide explains the tooling, board and fold decisions involved. Foil and coatings change reflection or surface build without creating the same formed geometry.

Use physical depth when relief is important and the structure can tolerate forming. Use optical contrast when a flatter surface, fine registration or reduced reverse marking is preferred. Combining both increases setup and tolerance risk.

Prepare separated artwork and process order

Supply vector layers for print, foil, embossing, gloss, matte, texture, cut, crease and glue. Mark trapping, clearances, viewing side and registration priorities. The hot-stamping production guide provides related guidance for foil tooling and transfer.

Process order matters. A coating or film can change foil adhesion; embossing can disturb print or lamination; later creasing can crack a brittle stack. Confirm the intended sequence with the converter and sample that sequence.

Send complete quotation inputs

A useful RFQ includes:

  • finished package, structure and version-controlled dieline;
  • board, print method, ink coverage and base colour;
  • separate artwork for every finish layer;
  • finish schedule, process order and clearances;
  • quantity by artwork and structural version;
  • sample route, packing and acceptance criteria.

Cost categories may include dies, foil tools, screens or plates, setup for each layer, registration waste, prototypes, replacement tooling and additional inspection.

Approve a representative physical sample

A rendering can show hierarchy but not reflection, relief, edge definition, surface feel, reverse marking or fold behaviour. Swatches on another board are directional only.

Approve the complete layer stack on the intended substrate. View under agreed lighting, fold and assemble the package, rub representative areas and record any prototype substitutions.

Define production start and QC

Start after artwork, material stack, process order, sample or proof, quantities, packing and acceptance criteria are approved.

Inspection can cover layer presence, registration, foil transfer, relief, gloss or matte contrast, texture continuity, scratches, pinholes, cracking, glue-zone condition and package assembly. Use an approved master instead of a generic “multi-dimensional” target.

Is Double Dimension a standard packaging process?

Not as a complete technical specification. Name the actual print, foil, embossing, coating or lamination processes required.

Can a digital rendering approve the layered effect?

No. It cannot prove reflection, relief, feel, registration or fold behaviour.

Should every premium design combine several finishes?

No. Additional layers add cost, setup and failure risk. Use only the processes needed for the intended hierarchy.

Can foil and embossing use the same artwork?

They may be registered, but tooling, clearances and relief requirements must be separated and approved.
