Poster Design for Print: Viewing Distance, Material and Proofing

Poster design represents one of the most impactful forms of graphic design, combining powerful visuals with strategic messaging to captivate audiences and deliver meaningful communication. In the world of graphic design, posters are more than just decorative art—they are tools of persuasion, awareness, and...

Poster Design for Print: Viewing Distance, Material and Proofing

A printed poster must be readable at its intended distance and remain suitable for its installation environment. Specify finished size, viewing distance, mounting method, indoor or outdoor exposure, material, image scale, printing, finish, version and packing before final layout.

UGI Packaging manufactures printed posters in our factory through our prepress, printing, finishing, cutting and packing operations. Smaller hand-distributed formats belong in flyer printing, while posters and related display pieces can follow our commercial printing workflow.

Design for distance and installation

Define where the viewer stands, how long the message is visible and what action is expected. The main headline and image should work before supporting details. Fine text that is readable on a monitor may fail at full size or from several meters away.

State whether the poster is framed, pasted, clipped, hung, mounted to board or rolled for distribution. Material stiffness, curl, tear resistance and surface finish should match that method. Outdoor exposure requires a project-specific substrate, ink and finishing evaluation; paper is not automatically weatherproof.

  • Mounting or framing method
  • Paper, film, board or other substrate
  • Coating or lamination
  • Version and language breakdown
  • Flat, rolled or mounted packing

Prepare full-size artwork

Check effective image resolution at final output size, not only the source pixel count. Extend backgrounds through bleed and keep text within safe margins. Fine lines, gradients, rich blacks and large solid areas should be evaluated for the selected print route.

The Ghent Workgroup PDF settings are an industry reference for production PDF preparation. UGI Packaging preflights the file for fonts, images, page boxes, color spaces and overprint before output.

Proof and accept the finished poster

A reduced PDF proof checks content, but it cannot prove full-size legibility. Review critical typography at actual size and use a color proof or printed sample when color, material or coating is important. Production begins after size, file, substrate, finish, proof and packing are approved.

Our QC team checks version, dimensions, trim, image quality, color consistency, surface condition and packing. Common failures include low-resolution images, unreadable supporting text, curl from unsuitable construction, scuffed solids and damage caused by rolling too tightly.

Frequently asked questions

How should poster type size be chosen?

Choose it from the actual viewing distance and message priority, then review critical text at full printed size.

Are printed paper posters weatherproof?

Not automatically. Outdoor use requires a substrate, print and finish selected and tested for the expected exposure.

Should posters ship flat or rolled?

Flat packing protects small rigid posters; rolling is efficient for larger flexible pieces but requires suitable diameter and recovery from curl.

What proof checks poster image quality?

Review the effective resolution at final size and use a full-size crop or printed sample for critical images and small text.
