Custom Paper Bags: Structures, Handles, Materials and Quality Tests
UGI Packaging manufactures the packaging and printed components covered in this article in our own factory. For custom paper bags, we develop the specification and sample, operate the relevant printing, cutting, forming, finishing and assembly equipment, and inspect the approved result before packing. This connects each buyer decision to the way our factory actually produces and controls the job.
A custom paper bag should be specified from the product load and handling method, not from a paper name alone. Bag width, height, gusset, bottom construction, handle attachment, paper caliper, print, coating and packing all influence whether the bag opens, carries and presents as intended. Food, grease, moisture and regulatory use require project-specific evidence.
Quick answer
Start with the product or representative load, finished dimensions and how the bag will be carried or filled. Choose flat or gusseted construction, handle type, paper and print after the load path is clear. Approve a filled physical sample and define bottom, handle, print, rub and dimensional acceptance before production.
Choose structure from the load
Flat bags suit simple contents; gusseted bags provide more volume; block or reinforced bottoms change the load path. Twisted-paper, flat-paper, ribbon or no-handle designs create different attachment and tear risks.
Avoid specifying a bag by “kraft” or “premium paper” alone. Paper grade, caliper, grain, coating, moisture exposure and the product’s shape all matter. Do not assume any paper bag is suitable for direct food, grease or pharmaceutical use.
Prepare dimensions, handles and artwork
Provide filled dimensions, product weight or representative load, opening, gusset, bottom, handle length, attachment position and tolerance priorities. Mark print panels, folds, seams, glue and reinforcement zones.
If offset printing is selected, ISO 12647-2:2013 gives a defined process-control scope that includes printing on cardboard packaging; it does not set the bag’s strength or appearance acceptance.
Send complete quotation inputs
A useful quotation request includes:
- filled and flat dimensions with version-controlled dieline;
- product or representative load and carry method;
- paper grade, caliper, grain and coating;
- handle material, attachment and reinforcement;
- print colours, finish and coverage;
- quantity, sample route, packing and acceptance criteria.
Cost categories may include structural development, handle or reinforcement, plates, setup, makeready, sample trials, packing and load or dimensional inspection.
Approve a filled sample
A PDF proves artwork and approximate dimensions but cannot show opening, load, handle pull, bottom deformation or fold cracking. A flat white sample may not represent printed paper or reinforcement.
Approve a physical bag with the intended paper, handle, print and construction. Fill it with the actual product or a dimensionally representative load, carry it as intended and retain the approved sample.
Define production start and QC
Start after structure, paper, handle, artwork, sample, quantities, packing and acceptance criteria are approved.
Inspection can cover dimensions, square opening, gusset, bottom closure, handle position, attachment, paper damage, print registration, rub, glue and filled-load behaviour. Set load and dimensional limits from function, not a generic number.
Prevent common failures
Handle pull-out can follow weak reinforcement, poor glue or excessive load. Bottom opening may follow wrong fold, moisture or insufficient bonding. Print scuffing and rub can increase on unprotected surfaces.
Reduce risk by testing the actual load, reinforcing the attachment, controlling paper grain and moisture, protecting finished bags and checking first-off production.
How UGI Packaging produces this work
Depending on the approved structure and artwork, our equipment route can include die-cutting equipment, digital printing equipment, flexographic printing presses, folding equipment, and gluing equipment. We develop the process specification and sample first, release the controlled production files, run the operations in the approved sequence, and inspect materials, registration, dimensions, surface condition, assembly and packing against the retained approval sample. Our engineers confirm project-specific materials, tooling and acceptance limits without shifting UGI Packaging’s manufacturing responsibility to an outside factory.
Use the UGI Packaging contact page to submit the bag brief.
For a deeper bag specification, review our custom paper gift bag guide. When the artwork suits a repeat production route, our flexographic printing guide explains the plate, proof and QC decisions that should be fixed before production.
Frequently asked questions
Is kraft paper automatically recyclable or biodegradable?
No. The complete material, coating, adhesive, handle and local recovery system must be assessed.
How should bag strength be specified?
State the product or representative load, carry method, duration and acceptance checks for the bottom and handles.
Can a flat sample approve a paper bag?
It can show artwork and some dimensions, but filled assembly and handle behaviour need a physical loaded sample.
Can paper bags be used for food?
Only when the complete construction, intended contact and destination-market evidence support that use.
