Packaging Printing for Boxes and Corrugated Cartons: Process and Quality Control
Packaging printing must be selected together with the substrate and converting route. Fine coated paper wrapped over a rigid box, folding carton board and corrugated liner do not reproduce small type, gradients, solids or finishes in the same way. The buyer should approve the complete combination of material, print process, color target, coating and converted structure.

Match print expectations to the packaging substrate
A smooth coated sheet can hold finer detail than a rough or absorbent liner. Corrugation can introduce washboarding, pressure variation and registration limits, especially when printing directly on combined board. Preprinted liner can improve graphics but changes the manufacturing route and cost structure. For rigid boxes, the visible print is often produced on a separate wrap sheet before mounting.
Provide the board grade, flute or box construction with the artwork request. If the structure is undecided, color and finish approval is premature because folds, seams, edges and wrapped corners determine where critical graphics can be placed.

Build artwork around converting
Keep text and important graphics away from creases, cut edges, glue zones and wrapped corners. Extend backgrounds through bleed, identify non-printing dielines and separate spot colors or special finishes clearly. Trapping, overprint and rich-black decisions should be made for the actual print process rather than copied from a screen design.

Proof the right risk
A digital PDF proof is for text, image, dieline and version approval. A contract color proof can establish an appearance target within its stated process limits. A physical white sample checks structure, and a printed production sample is most useful when substrate texture, coating, foil, embossing, corrugated print behavior or wrapped-edge alignment is critical.
The production clock starts only after dieline, material, artwork, color reference, finish, sample route and purchase details are approved. Plates, dies, foil blocks and embossing tools are fixed-cost items that should be identified separately in the quote.
Factory QC and acceptance
Our QC team checks approved version, print registration, color consistency, small text, barcode area, coating and finish appearance, then verifies cutting, creasing, folding, gluing and assembly against the approved structure. Common failures include artwork crossing a crease, weak contrast on an absorbent board, cracking at folds, glue contamination, finish misregistration and color targets defined only by a monitor image.

Can the same artwork print identically on carton board and corrugated liner?
Not necessarily. Surface smoothness, absorbency, print pressure and converting route change detail, solids and color appearance. Approve each substrate and process separately.
What proof is needed for packaging printing?
Use a PDF for content, a color proof for an appearance target, a white sample for structure, and a printed sample when material and finish interaction are important.
When does the production schedule begin?
After the dieline, material, artwork, color target, finishes, sample and commercial order details are approved.
