Packaging Design Brief: Structure, Artwork and Production Approval
Packaging design should begin with the product and supply chain, not decoration. A complete brief defines product dimensions and sensitivity, pack quantity, channel, handling, display, opening, materials, compliance evidence, printing, finishes, packing and acceptance tests.

Separate structural and graphic requirements
Structural design controls fit, protection, opening, closure, assembly and packing efficiency. Graphic design controls hierarchy, brand elements, instructions and production artwork. The two must use the same approved dieline, but approval responsibilities should be recorded separately.
Provide product samples or reliable dimensions, weight, fragile areas, orientation, contact restrictions and distribution conditions. State whether the package is primary, secondary, retail display, gift presentation or shipping protection. A package may combine several roles, but each must be tested explicitly.

Use staged prototypes and proofs
A digital rendering communicates appearance but does not prove dimensions, material behavior or production feasibility. A white sample checks structure and fit. A printed sample checks artwork, color, material and finishes. A pilot or production sample is appropriate when tooling, molding, assembly or process interaction creates additional risk.
Distribution tests must match the actual system. ISTA publishes test procedures for defined transport scenarios; selecting one requires knowledge of the packed product and route, and passing a procedure does not guarantee every real-world outcome.
Control files, changes and production release
The approved record should include dieline revision, artwork version, materials, finishes, components, sample reference, packing instructions and acceptance criteria. A change to product size, insert, coating, barcode or mandatory text can affect several files and should trigger controlled reapproval.
