Flexographic Printing for Packaging: Plates, Colour and QC Guide

Flexographic printing transfers ink from a raised flexible plate through a controlled ink-metering system to paper, board, film or other compatible webs and sheets. Packaging buyers do not need to select a press model, but they do need to prepare artwork for the selected print condition. Substrate, plate, anilox, ink, screens, trapping, colour sequence and converting all affect the result.
Quick answer
Choose flexography when the package, material, quantity and converting route fit a plate-based process. Ask the converter for the artwork specification before final separation. Define spot colours, process targets, barcode needs, critical copy, proof limitations and acceptance conditions. Do not reuse offset artwork without checking minimum type, reverses, screens, trapping and distortion for the actual flexographic condition.
Choose the process from the package
Flexography can be suitable for corrugated, labels, flexible packaging and selected paper applications, but those categories use different presses, plates, inks and control methods. Offset or digital printing may be a better fit for other structures, quantities or image demands.
Avoid selecting the process solely from a generic speed or cost claim. Plate cost, number of colours, substrate, web or sheet format, changeovers, finishing and quantity all affect the commercial route.
Prepare materials and artwork
Supply vector logos and text, linked high-resolution images, named spot colours and a controlled dieline. Separate white ink, varnish, foil, cut, crease and technical marks. Identify barcodes, small reverse text, overprints, knockouts and areas where colour is critical.

A useful quotation request includes:
- finished package, dimensions, structure and substrate;
- print side, colour count, spot-colour references and white ink if needed;
- artwork files, images, fonts and version-controlled dieline;
- barcode type, orientation, size and verification requirement;
- quantity by artwork version and finishing sequence;
- proof route, packing method and critical acceptance criteria.
Cost categories can include prepress, separations, plates, colour matching, setup, substrate and ink trials, makeready waste, repeat-length or layout changes and inspection. Plate reuse depends on unchanged artwork, print condition and plate condition.
Approve a representative sample
A calibrated contract proof can guide colour and content but may not reproduce the actual substrate, ink film, trapping, dot gain, opacity or surface finish. A digital structural sample may use a different print process entirely.
For critical work, approve artwork and colour targets first, then review a representative press sample or first-off production output under agreed lighting. Barcode and functional marks should be verified on the final printed and converted construction.
Define production start and QC
Start production timing only after artwork, separations, substrate, colour references, proof, quantity, finishing and acceptance criteria are approved. A material or ink change can alter colour and print behaviour.
Inspection can cover content, colour, density or spectral targets where agreed, registration, trapping, dot or highlight loss, dirty print, pinholing, mottling, plate bounce, banding, slur, setoff, barcode readability and damage during converting. Targets must fit the specific process condition.
Prevent common failures
Fine reverses can fill, small highlights can disappear and type can distort when artwork does not match plate and press conditions. Colour variation may follow substrate, ink, viscosity, drying or setup changes. Repeated bands can be mechanical or layout-related.
Reduce risk by using the converter profile early, simplifying fragile elements, naming spot colours, controlling files and comparing first-off output with approved references before the full run.

Frequently asked questions
Can offset artwork be used unchanged for flexography?
Not automatically. Type, reverses, screens, trapping, distortion and colour separations should be checked against the selected flexographic condition.
Does a contract proof exactly match the press sheet?
It is a controlled reference, but substrate, ink, opacity, trapping and finish can create differences. Define what the proof approves.
Can printing plates be reused?
Possibly, if artwork and production conditions remain compatible and the plates are serviceable. Confirm before quotation.
