A printed menu must balance readability, handling, cleaning, appearance and replacement frequency. Format, page count, paper surface, ink coverage, lamination or varnish, binding and corner treatment should be selected together. A digital proof can approve wording and layout, but the finished menu needs a representative physical sample for glare, fold, trim and handling checks.

Choose single-sheet, folded, booklet or board-mounted format by the number of items, reading distance and replacement cycle. Select paper and finish for glare, writing, wiping and expected handling; do not assume lamination makes a menu waterproof. Define page order, barcode or QR content, proof route, packing and acceptance before quotation.

Choose format and finish from service conditions

Gloss can increase reflection and colour density; matte can reduce glare but may show rub polishing. Lamination adds a film layer, while varnish changes the surface without the same construction. Folding and binding affect gutter, trim and cleaning.

If menus are used near moisture, oil or repeated wiping, describe the actual exposure and test it. Food-contact, hygiene and chemical-resistance decisions require project-specific material and use evidence.

Prepare files and print route

Provide final page size, fold or binding, bleed, safe area, page order, images, fonts and separate finish layers. Mark prices, allergens, QR codes, legal text and seasonal version fields for controlled revision.

When offset is selected, ISO 12647-2:2013 provides a defined process-control scope for colour separations, proofs and production prints, including cardboard packaging. It is not a finished-menu performance guarantee.

Approve a handling-representative sample

A screen or PDF cannot show glare, fold cracking, trim, curl, wiping or page order. A different paper or finish can give a misleading impression.

Approve a physical menu on the intended paper and finish. Read it at normal distance, fold or bind it, handle and wipe representative areas where relevant, inspect codes and retain a master.

Define production start and QC

Start after copy, artwork, paper, finish, binding, sample or proof, quantities, packing and acceptance criteria are approved.

Inspection can cover content, page order, trim, fold, colour reference, registration, lamination or varnish, scratches, curl, binding, QR readability and surface condition after the agreed handling check.

Prevent common failures

Wrong version, gutter loss and small type can result from uncontrolled files or imposition. Glare can reduce readability; edge lift or curl can follow film, moisture or folding conditions.

Reduce risk with version control, a representative bound or folded sample, clear safe areas, controlled packing and first-off inspection.

Frequently asked questions

Does lamination make a menu waterproof?

No. Edges, folds, openings and the complete construction still determine moisture performance.

Is matte always easier to read?

Not always. Glare, lighting, ink density, type size and surface rub all affect readability. Test the finished sample.

Can a PDF approve a folded menu?

No. It can approve content and layout, but fold, trim, curl and handling need a physical sample.

Should seasonal menus use separate files?

Use controlled versioning and identify every variable field, page and approval so outdated copies are not produced.
