“Emote Coat” is not an industry-wide coating specification. If the design intent is to create a particular emotional or sensory response, convert that mood into observable requirements: gloss or matte level, softness, drag, roughness, particle effect, colour interaction, coverage and handling exposure. Then select a real coating system that is compatible with the board, ink and later converting.

Use reference samples and descriptive pairs such as smooth versus rough, dry versus rubbery, subtle versus coarse and flat versus reflective. State the substrate, print, coating area, later foil or embossing, folds, glue and expected handling. A screen image cannot approve touch or surface interaction; retain a physical master.

Separate the mood from the process

A creative brief may ask for calm, warm, technical, natural or dramatic packaging. Those words guide design but do not tell production which coating, film or texture to use. Translate the mood into a finish schedule and sample reference. Note whether the priority is softness, friction, sparkle, relief, reduced glare or contrast with another surface.

Compare soft touch, tactile texture and formed relief

Choose by feel, appearance, fold and glue behaviour, scuff visibility, code readability and later processing. A coating is unsuitable when it conflicts with sealing, writing, scanning, tight folds or required product-contact evidence.

Prepare the complete material stack

State board or paper, print process, ink or toner, primer, coating coverage, lamination and later foil, UV, embossing, die cutting and gluing. Mark exclusion zones and surfaces that must remain flat or writable.

Dark colours may show rub polishing; rough stock may change smoothness; heavy ink can affect adhesion or drying. A finish approved on one stack should not be assumed identical on another.

A useful RFQ includes:

  • finished package, dieline and viewing side;
  • substrate, print route and ink coverage;
  • sensory descriptors and physical reference sample;
  • spot or flood coverage and exclusion zones;
  • later foil, embossing, folds, glue and handling;
  • quantity, sample route and acceptance criteria.

Cost categories may include formulation or material trials, plates or screens, setup, drying or curing, prototype runs, process-order tests and inspection.

Approve touch with a physical sample

A PDF can approve placement and content but not softness, drag, roughness, gloss, rub polishing or odour. A supplier swatch on different stock is only a directional reference.

Approve a representative sample on the intended printed substrate. Handle it with clean and normal-use hands, fold and assemble it, compare under agreed lighting and retain a labelled master.

Define production start and QC

Release production after the finish description, material stack, artwork, sample, quantities, packing and acceptance criteria are approved.

Inspection can cover correct coating, coverage, gloss, feel, uniformity, pinholes, streaks, rub change, blocking, cracking, registration and glue-zone condition. Tactile acceptance should use a retained master and agreed viewing and handling conditions.

Can a screen proof approve a tactile coating?

No. It can approve artwork and location, but touch, gloss and handling response need a physical sample.

No. Soft touch is generally smoother, while textured coatings create a more evident surface profile. Formulations still vary.
