What is the structural difference between paperboard and molded pulp inserts?
Paperboard inserts are cut, creased and folded from sheets, while molded pulp is formed into three-dimensional shapes. Their stiffness, cushioning and fit depend on the exact grade, thickness, geometry and manufacturing route.
Which insert gives better product presentation?
Paperboard offers broad printable surfaces and sharp folded geometry. Molded pulp provides sculpted cavities and a fibre texture. The preferred appearance depends on brand intent, product visibility and finishing requirements.
Which is better for cakes, macarons or chocolates?
The decision depends on product mass, fragility, shape, count, surface sensitivity, removal method, grease or moisture exposure and distribution. Evaluate each product rather than applying one material choice to all foods.
Can either insert touch food directly?
Only with appropriate evidence for the exact fibres, additives, coatings, inks and other components under the intended food, time, temperature and contact conditions. Material category alone is not enough.
Does recycled fibre make an insert unsuitable for food?
Not automatically, but recycled content does not prove suitability either. Review the exact material, functional barriers if used, manufacturing controls and applicable destination-market requirements.
Which insert handles grease or moisture better?
Neither material family has one universal result. Fibre type, density, coating or treatment, edges, folds and exposure time matter. Test the exact insert with the actual product and conditions.
Which option protects fragile pieces better?
Protection comes from cavity geometry, clearances, contact area, retention, compression and the outer box. Molded shapes can distribute contact, while folded paperboard can create dividers and platforms; both require fit testing.
Can the same insert fit several product sizes?
Sometimes, if the dimensional range and movement remain acceptable. Multi-size designs can compromise retention or presentation, so test the smallest and largest products including manufacturing variation.
How do tooling and setup differ?
Paperboard normally uses cutting and creasing tools plus folding or gluing setup. Molded pulp may require forming tooling, pulp preparation, forming and drying setup. Requirements depend on the selected production route.
Does one insert always have a lower MOQ or cost?
No. Economical production quantity depends on engineering, tooling, cavities, material, nesting, drying or converting time, setup waste, packing volume and order quantity. Compare actual quotations.
Is either option automatically recyclable or compostable?
No. Coatings, additives, inks, adhesives, food residue, separation and local recovery systems affect the finished package. Compostability requires applicable evidence for the exact finished item and intended system.
What sample should buyers approve?
Approve a production-representative insert inside the final outer box with actual products. Check loading, removal, movement, compression, abrasion, grease or moisture exposure, stacking and planned distribution.
