Does FSC-Certified Paper Make the Finished Gift Box FSC-Certified?

Understand why FSC-certified paper does not automatically certify a finished gift box and what chain-of-custody and label evidence buyers need.

FSC Chain of Custody FAQ

Does FSC-Certified Paper Make the Finished Gift Box FSC-Certified?

A buyer guide to material claims, chain of custody, invoice evidence, outsourcing and authorised FSC labels on finished gift boxes.

The short answer: certified input paper is only one requirement

FSC-certified paper does not automatically make the converted box FSC-certified. The relevant supply chain must maintain chain of custody, sell the product with a valid claim and obtain authorisation for any FSC label or trademark use.

Why is FSC-certified paper not enough for the finished box?

Printing, converting, outsourcing, mixing and sale occur after paper purchase. Chain-of-custody controls must preserve the claim through the organisations and processes covered by the applicable FSC rules.

What proves that purchased paper carried an FSC claim?

Check the supplier certificate status and scope and the FSC claim on the relevant transaction document. A brochure, logo or material sample alone does not establish the purchased quantity claim.

Does every printer or box converter need certification?

Requirements depend on legal ownership, activities, outsourcing and who makes the FSC claim. The proposed supply chain should be mapped against current FSC chain-of-custody rules.

Can an uncertified company print an FSC label supplied by the buyer?

Do not assume it can. On-product trademark use and production arrangements must follow the current FSC trademark and chain-of-custody requirements and approval process.

What is an FSC product group?

Certificate holders define product groups and control eligible inputs, claims and output products within their chain-of-custody system. Confirm that the required packaging product falls within scope.

Can FSC Mix, FSC Recycled and FSC 100% be used interchangeably?

No. They are different claims with different eligible inputs and controls. The order, invoice and label must use the claim supported by the actual product group and material accounting.

Does certification cover non-paper components?

FSC primarily addresses forest-based materials and chain of custody. Magnets, films, foam, textiles and other components may affect other claims but are not made environmentally preferable by the FSC label.

Can a certificate code be copied from a supplier website?

No. Verify the organisation and scope in the official FSC database and use trademarks or licence codes only as authorised for the actual product and communication.

What should appear in the RFQ and purchase order?

State the required FSC claim, product, quantities, label intent, artwork approval responsibility, document claim, outsourcing disclosure and requirement to notify certificate or scope changes.

What should buyers verify before approving artwork and shipment?

Verify current certificate status and scope, transaction-document claims, product-group eligibility, label approval evidence, licence code, production records and final invoice claim.
