Food Packaging Adhesive FAQ
Water-Based Glue vs Hot-Melt Adhesive for Food Packaging
A buyer-focused comparison of setting mechanism, substrates, line conditions, temperature, moisture, food contact and production trials.
The short answer: specify the exact adhesive and operating window
Water-based and hot-melt adhesives are broad families, not single products. Selection depends on substrate, coating, application equipment, open and set time, compression, temperature, moisture, food-contact conditions and package tests.
What is the basic difference between water-based and hot-melt adhesive?
Water-based products use water as a carrier and set as it is absorbed or evaporates. Hot melts are applied in a molten state and usually set as they cool; some reactive grades continue curing.
Is one adhesive family always stronger?
No. Strength depends on the exact chemistry, substrate surfaces, coat pattern, temperature, compression, ageing and use conditions. Compare qualified grades on the actual package.
Which works better on coated paperboard?
Coatings can reduce absorption or surface energy and change both systems. The adhesive supplier and converter should confirm compatibility with the exact coating, print and finishing sequence.
How do open time and set time affect production?
They must match application-to-compression distance, folding speed and carton geometry. Too short or too long a window can cause poor fibre tear, spring-back, squeeze-out or blocked equipment.
How do heat and cold affect the bond?
Service temperature can soften, embrittle or creep an adhesive depending on chemistry. Define hot filling, refrigeration, freezing, reheating and transport extremes before qualification.
What happens with grease or moisture exposure?
Water, steam, oil and sauces can affect paperboard, coatings and the adhesive interface. Test the seam orientation and exposure duration with the actual product or justified conditions.
Is either type automatically suitable for food packaging?
No. Obtain documentation for the exact grade, intended market and contact geometry. Adhesive placement behind a barrier or seam still requires assessment of the complete article.
Do the systems need different equipment?
Yes. Water-based systems may require pumping, metering and drying or absorption time. Hot-melt systems require heated tanks, hoses or applicators and temperature control. Exact requirements depend on the line.
Which option has lower cost or environmental impact?
There is no universal answer. Material use, energy, drying or heating, cleaning, waste, maintenance, downtime, package performance and end-of-life effects must be compared for the actual process.
What documents should buyers request?
Request the technical data sheet, safety data sheet, food-contact statement for the target market, application window, substrate compatibility, storage life, traceability and any relevant migration information.
What should be approved before mass production?
Run a production-representative line trial and test seam position, fibre tear or bond integrity, compression time, heat, cold, moisture, grease, ageing and distribution conditions.
Water-based and hot-melt adhesive comparison
Match adhesive chemistry and line setup to the complete package use.
| Factor | Water-based | Hot-melt |
|---|---|---|
| Setting | Water absorption or evaporation | Cooling, sometimes followed by reaction |
| Line needs | Metering and drying or dwell | Heated delivery and temperature control |
| Substrate | Porosity and coating matter | Surface energy and heat response matter |
| Use conditions | Moisture and drying history matter | Heat, cold and creep matter |
