How Thick Should Paperboard Be for a Cake Box?
A practical guide to selecting cake-box paperboard using dimensions, cake support, windows, moisture, stacking and complete-package testing.
The short answer: specify the complete cake-packaging load system
There is no universal cake-box paperboard thickness. Buyers should define box dimensions, cake and board mass, load paths, windows, handles, stacking, refrigeration, condensation, delivery and food-contact conditions, then approve the exact board grade and converted package.
Is there a standard paperboard thickness for every cake box?
No. Suitable caliper and stiffness depend on box length, width and height, unsupported panels, cake and support-board mass, windows, handles, stacking, moisture and delivery conditions.
Is thicker paperboard always stronger?
Not necessarily. Density, fibre and layer construction, moisture, grain direction, folds, geometry and board grade affect bending stiffness and compression. Compare technical data for the exact proposed grade and verify the converted box.
Can buyers convert paper grammage directly to thickness?
No reliable universal conversion exists. Boards with the same grammage can have different density, caliper and stiffness. Request the exact grade, nominal grammage, measured caliper and relevant strength data.
Should the cake box or cake board carry the cake weight?
The cake support board and outer box have different functions and should be specified separately. The load path from cake board to carton base, side walls, handles and carrying hands must be designed rather than assumed.
Do larger or taller cake boxes need thicker board?
They may need greater stiffness because panel spans and buckling risk change, but dimensions alone do not set a safe thickness. Structural folds, corner locks, lid depth, cake board and secondary packing can change the requirement.
How does a clear window affect board selection?
A window removes paperboard area and can reduce local stiffness around the lid or side panel. Window size, corner radius, film, adhesive overlap and nearby scores should be reviewed with the complete structure.
Do handles change the paperboard requirement?
Yes. Handle slots or attached handles concentrate load and can tear or distort adjacent board. Product mass, hand clearance, reinforcement and carrying orientation should be evaluated on the final package.
How do refrigeration and condensation affect cake boxes?
Moisture can reduce paperboard stiffness, change coating or adhesive behaviour and affect print surfaces. State storage temperature, duration and transition to ambient conditions, then test the production-representative box after conditioning.
Does food-contact grade determine structural performance?
No. Food-contact suitability and physical strength are separate requirements. Exact board, coating, ink and adhesive need appropriate intended-use evidence, while fit, stiffness, carrying and stacking need physical verification.
Is heavier board always the lowest-risk or lowest-cost choice?
No. Extra material can change folding, yield, shipping mass and cost without correcting weak geometry or load paths. Grade, sheet format, setup, waste and quantity determine economical production quantity for the actual design.
What should buyers approve before mass production?
Approve a production-representative box with the intended cake board and real cake or controlled mass equivalent. Check fit, erection, lifting, window and handle areas, refrigeration, stacking and the relevant delivery or distribution test plan.
