What is the difference between CMYK and Pantone printing?

CMYK creates colours by combining cyan, magenta, yellow and black process separations. A Pantone spot colour identifies a colour from a specified Pantone system and is normally prepared as a separate ink. The artwork and quotation should state which elements use each method.

When is CMYK the practical choice for gift packaging?

CMYK is commonly suited to photographs, tonal images, gradients and artwork containing many colours. Its reproducible gamut depends on the printing condition, substrate and colour management, so a monitor display is not a contract proof.

When can a Pantone spot colour help?

A spot colour can help when a buyer wants a named physical reference for an important brand colour or needs an ink system outside ordinary CMYK, such as some metallic or fluorescent ranges. It still requires the correct Pantone library and production conditions.

Does a Pantone number guarantee exactly the same colour on every package?

No. Paper shade, coated or uncoated surface, ink film, opacity, drying, lamination, varnish and viewing light can change appearance. Use the correct physical reference and approve colour on the intended material and finish.

Can a Pantone colour be converted to CMYK?

Software can provide a process build, but it is an approximation within a particular colour space and printing condition. Some spot colours fall outside the achievable CMYK gamut. Buyers should decide whether visual similarity or a named spot ink is the contractual requirement.

Can CMYK and Pantone colours be used together?

Yes, when the press route and budget support the required separations. A design may use CMYK images plus one or more spot colours, but extra inks can add setup, wash-up, registration and waste considerations. The final separation plan should be confirmed before artwork release.

How do lamination, varnish and coloured paper affect colour?

They can shift gloss, contrast, density and perceived hue. Transparent inks also interact with the substrate colour. Proofing on plain white paper cannot fully predict a coloured or specialty stock with the final surface treatment.

Which method is better for fine text and line artwork?

Either can work when artwork, plate or imaging resolution, ink coverage and registration are suitable. Is Pantone printing always more expensive or limited to a higher MOQ?
