Export Carton & Pallet Specification — Comparison & Upgrade Guide

TL;DR: Upgrading export carton and pallet specs is a grade decision, not just a cost decision — choosing the wrong ECT or pallet pattern for your product weight and lane conditions is the most common cause of transit claims we see.

TL;DR: A carton rated ECT-32 loses roughly 40–50% of its stacking strength when relative humidity exceeds 85% — a threshold regularly exceeded in sea freight containers crossing tropical routes.

ECT Grade vs. Mullen Burst: Two Rating Systems That Answer Different Questions #

These two corrugated board strength standards have coexisted for decades, and we still get briefs that mix them up. Understanding which rating governs your shipment conditions is the first decision in any carton spec review.

ECT (Edge Crush Test, measured per ASTM D2659) quantifies how much vertical compressive load a board column can sustain before buckling. It’s the correct metric for stacking performance in a palletized distribution chain. Mullen Burst (per ASTM D774) measures resistance to puncture through the board face — relevant for rough handling, irregular loads, and hook-and-grab warehouse operations, but a poor predictor of column stacking strength.

The industry shifted toward ECT as the primary domestic US carton rating through the late 1990s. Export lanes, however, still frequently reference Mullen Burst in buyer-supplied specs — partly because older procurement templates haven’t been updated, and partly because some retailers in Southeast Asia and the Middle East still specify it. When a client briefs us with a Mullen Burst figure, we always cross-check whether their lane is primarily stacking-critical or handling-critical before confirming the grade.

For most consumer goods exported from China to the US, EU, or Australia via sea freight, ECT-32 C-flute is the entry-level adequate spec — but only for cartons under 25 kg gross weight, stacked no higher than 4 cartons on a standard 1200×1000mm pallet. Anything heavier, taller, or routed through a tropical transshipment hub warrants a grade review.

We’d prioritize ECT-44 over ECT-32 any time a product ships through Singapore, Port Klang, or Colombo in Q2–Q3. The moisture degradation at those ports in peak season is measurable. Our QC-F12 transit risk checklist flags humidity-sensitive lanes automatically at the quoting stage.

What Causes Carton Failure in Transit — and Why Grade Alone Doesn’t Fix It #

The most frequent transit failure we diagnose isn’t a board grade problem. It’s a mismatch between the structural spec and the actual pallet configuration, stacking height, or lane humidity — all of which interact.

Overstacking relative to the ECT rating. When a logistics team adds a layer to maximize container fill, a pallet that was designed for 4-high becomes 5-high. For a 20 kg carton on an ECT-32 board, that fifth layer adds roughly 80 kg of cumulative load to the bottom carton. ECT-32 C-flute in standard ambient conditions has a dynamic safety factor of about 1.65 under ISO 12048 stacking test methodology. Add the McKee formula humidity correction for 80% RH and that safety factor drops below 1.2 — which puts the bottom tier cartons at measurable compression creep risk within a 30-day sea voyage. The failure mode looks like gradual deck collapse at the pallet base, and the product damage is often attributed to rough handling at destination rather than traced back to the stacking load.

Flute direction relative to carton orientation. On a regular slotted container (RSC), the corrugated flutes run vertically when the carton is closed and palletized. That’s by design — vertical flutes carry compressive load, horizontal flutes don’t. We’ve seen briefs where the client-supplied structural drawing had the flute direction reversed, typically because the original artwork file was rotated 90° at some point in the approval chain. The result is a carton with its nominal ECT rating reduced to roughly 20–30% of stated value in the stacking axis. A carton that should have cleared 40 kg stacking load fails under 12 kg. This is caught in our pre-production blank review under what we log internally as the FD-01 flute orientation check, but if a carton has already been produced and the failure appears at destination, tracing it back to this root cause requires comparing the actual board grain direction against the original structural file.

Pallet pattern and overhang. A column stack pattern on a 1200×1000mm pallet provides maximum edge-to-edge compressive strength transfer — every carton corner sits directly above the one below. A brick-lay or pinwheel pattern distributes load more evenly across the pallet deck but introduces midspan bending across each carton’s base panel. For cartons with a base-to-height ratio below 0.5 (tall, narrow cartons), a brick-lay pattern combined with ECT-32 board and loads above 18 kg per carton is a proven failure combination on 30+ day sea freight lanes. The fix is either upgrading the board or specifying column-stack with stretch wrap tension above 18 N/cm² — not one or the other.

Liner weight imbalance. Some lower-cost corrugated mills supply boards where the outer liner weight is significantly heavier than the inner liner. This meets the ECT test number on paper because the ECT test compresses the full fluted column. But in dynamic vibration conditions (per ISTA 2A transit simulation), the thin inner liner delaminates from the flute tips first, particularly in high-humidity conditions. We audit incoming corrugated lots against GB/T 6544-2008 and check liner weight split — a board showing 125/90/125 gsm liner/medium/liner split performs differently in vibration than one spec’d at 140/90/110 gsm, even if both clear ECT-32.

Does Pallet Type Actually Matter for Standard Export Cartons? #

Yes — specifically for ocean freight, and the answer changes for air freight.

For palletized ocean freight, the choice between a standard CP1 (1200×1000mm) EUR-compatible pallet and a North American 48″×40″ pallet directly affects how your carton footprint is designed. A carton sized for flush coverage on a 1200×1000mm pallet will have 25–50mm of overhang on a 48″×40″ pallet at the short dimension. That overhang, even 25mm, introduces a cantilevered bending stress at the bottom tier under compression. For air freight, pallet mass is a direct cost driver and most brand owners switch to slip sheets or lightweight export pallets under 12 kg; the carton spec then needs to compensate with higher board strength since pallet rigidity no longer contributes to load distribution.

For export cartons shipped LCL (less than container load) without full pallet control, we recommend ECT-48 as the minimum grade regardless of per-carton weight — the stacking pattern in an LCL consolidation is unpredictable and the humidity exposure during cross-docking adds measurable risk.

Specification Notes for Brand Partners #

When you brief us on an export carton project, the three data points that most affect our structural recommendation are: (1) gross weight per carton including product and inner packaging, (2) destination region and shipping mode, and (3) your retailer’s or 3PL’s pallet configuration requirements.

The most common brief gap we encounter is missing retailer compliance documentation. Several major US and EU retail chains have specific carton compression and pallet configuration requirements — Walmart’s vendor standards and Amazon’s SIOC packaging guidelines both specify minimum compression performance benchmarks. When these aren’t included in the initial brief, the first sample can be technically correct against generic export standards but non-compliant for the specific customer. That triggers a board grade revision and a second sampling cycle.

Our standard structural sampling timeline for export cartons is 12–15 working days from confirmed spec. If ECT testing per ASTM D2659 is required on the sample (as opposed to relying on the mill cert), add 5 working days. Clients who provide retailer compliance docs upfront consistently land on the correct spec in the first sample round.

Frequently Asked Questions #

What’s the minimum ECT rating for a 20 kg carton going to the US by sea freight?
ECT-32 C-flute is technically sufficient for a 20 kg carton in a 4-high column stack under dry ambient conditions, but we typically recommend ECT-44 for any sea freight lane with transshipment through a tropical port — the humidity-driven strength loss on ECT-32 in those conditions narrows your safety margin to the point where a single overstacked pallet becomes a transit claim.

Should I specify Mullen Burst or ECT in my export carton brief?
It depends on your downstream handling environment. If your product moves on pallets through a controlled distribution chain, ECT is the relevant spec — it predicts stacking performance. If your product is handled loose, dropped, or moved with hooks and clamps at any point in the chain, Mullen Burst matters and should be co-specified. Many of our clients who ship to Southeast Asian markets include both in their specs for exactly this reason.

Can we use the same carton spec for both Amazon FBA and retail pallet delivery?
Usually not without a grade adjustment. Amazon’s ISTA-6 Amazon.com protocol requires cartons to pass both compression and vibration testing as individual units, not as part of a palletized stack. Retail pallet delivery specs are designed around stacked compressive load. A carton optimized for one will often underperform on the other — the typical resolution is ECT-44 or ECT-48 double-wall, which meets both thresholds for most product weights under 18 kg per carton.

How often should we review our export carton spec?
Any time gross weight per carton changes by more than 15%, shipping lane changes, or a retailer updates their vendor compliance manual. Outside of those triggers, an annual review against your actual claim rate is worth running — if transit damage claims are below 0.3% of shipped units, your spec is likely adequate; above 0.8% consistently points to a structural or pallet configuration gap.
