Catalogue Design for Print: Product Data, Pagination and Proof Control
Catalogue design is a data-control project as much as a layout project. Buyers need an approved product database, image set, page architecture, page count, binding, paper, version plan and proof workflow before the final print files can be trusted.

Create controlled product and asset sources
Assign every item a stable SKU or identifier and define the approved fields: name, description, dimensions, options, price status, technical data, image and category. Do not copy updates between layout pages manually without a change record. File names should connect images and tables to the correct product.
Build a page map for covers, contents, category openers, product sections, indexes, advertisements and blanks. Binding and signature planning can constrain page count, so major additions should be resolved before final pagination and spine width are approved.

Use templates without losing production control
Master pages, paragraph styles and product modules keep hierarchy consistent, but exceptions still require review. Protect inner margins for binding, extend backgrounds through bleed and avoid placing essential information across a gutter that will not open flat.

Proof in stages and freeze versions
First approve product data and page order, then typography and images, then the final print PDF. A color proof is useful for critical images; a bound dummy checks paper bulk, opening, spine and sequence. Each regional version needs a unique identifier and quantity breakdown.
