Plastic Boxes for Packaging: Materials, Equipment and Production
UGI Packaging manufactures folded clear boxes, thermoformed containers and rigid injection-molded plastic cases. These structures use different materials, molds and production equipment, so our engineers define the manufacturing route before quoting. We do not price “a plastic box” as one generic item: wall thickness, geometry, closure, decoration and expected quantity determine whether sheet converting, thermoforming, injection molding or blow molding is appropriate.
Start with the manufacturing route
A folded clear box begins as sheet and is cut, creased and glued. Thermoformed packaging heats sheet over or into a mold and is suited to trays, cavities and clamshells. Injection molding uses pellets and a closed mold to create thicker walls, hinges, latches or detailed geometry. The tooling cost, practical volume, wall thickness and tolerance differ substantially; quoting them as one product category creates unreliable comparisons.
Material and end-use questions
PET, PVC, PP, PS and other polymers have different clarity, stiffness, impact, heat and chemical behavior. Recycled content, color, additives and coatings also change performance. For food-contact projects, the regulatory status depends on the complete formulation and intended conditions of use; the US FDA explains how to determine the regulatory status of food-contact-material components. A resin name or general material statement alone is not approval for every product.
Structure, visibility and paper integration
Clear packaging exposes dust, scratches, gate marks, trim edges and product orientation. Define closure, hinge life, nesting, insert retention and protective film before artwork. Equipment and production sequence
Our folded-sheet line uses cutting, creasing, screen or digital printing and clear-plastic gluing equipment. Thermoformed products run through sheet heating, forming molds, vacuum or pressure forming and trim tools. Our injection-molding machines use matched molds and controlled cooling for thicker cases and functional details, while blow-molding equipment is used for suitable hollow forms. Decoration can involve screen printing, pad printing, labels, foil or transfer processes before final assembly and inspection.
Quotation and sample requirements
Provide product dimensions and weight, intended use, manufacturing route if known, polymer and grade requirements, wall or sheet thickness, closure, transparency, color, decoration, insert, quantity, pack-out and destination. Tooling, color matching, protective film, print setup and assembly fixtures can create fixed costs. A prototype made by a different process can check shape but may not predict production shrinkage, hinge life, gloss, impact or gate appearance.
QC, acceptance and capability boundary
Our acceptance checks cover dimensions, wall thickness, warpage, clarity, color, scratches, trim edges, closure force, hinge action, print adhesion, product fit and packing damage. Production starts after the approved material, drawing, mold or cutting tool, artwork, decoration, quantity and representative sample are released. Frequently asked questions
What type of plastic box is cheapest to tool?
There is no universal answer. Folded sheet, thermoformed and injection-molded boxes have different tooling and unit-cost structures, so volume and geometry must be quoted together.
Can a 3D-printed prototype approve an injection-molded box?
It can approve general shape and access, but not production shrinkage, gate marks, hinge life, surface gloss or the exact material response.
Is PET automatically suitable for food packaging?
No. Suitability depends on the exact formulation, additives, intended food, temperature, duration and applicable regulatory status.
Which plastic-box processes does UGI Packaging operate?
