Equipment is important, but the result also depends on protected artwork, authorized data, material compatibility, inspection tools and a documented response to rejected or duplicated identifiers.

Equipment and processes we may use

Depending on the project, our production route may include offset or digital presses, variable-data printing, screen or specialty-ink application, hot-foil or holographic transfer, embossing, die-cutting and folding/gluing equipment. Inspection may use UV lamps, barcode or QR readers, cameras and controlled sample comparison. These are retained as real factory process options, but no single machine provides a complete authentication system.

Factory workflow from security brief to finished package

  1. Risk and ownership brief: identify the threat, inspection users, technology owner and party responsible for authentication decisions.
  2. Artwork engineering: separate security layers, define registration tolerances and protect master files and code ranges.
  3. Material and process trial: test foil, ink, coating, adhesive, chip or label compatibility with the box construction.
  4. Controlled production: issue approved files and data, record rejects, and prevent unauthorized overruns or code reuse.
  5. Verification and reconciliation: inspect the agreed sample or quantity and account for issued, accepted, rejected and unused identifiers.

Variable codes, QR and RFID boundaries

A printed QR code can lead to public product information, a controlled verification service or a traceability record. GS1 Digital Link URI syntax provides a standards-based way to express GS1 identifiers in web addresses. The standard defines syntax and behaviour; it does not create the brand’s database, security policy or consumer experience.

When RFID or NFC is required, UGI Packaging can engineer the paper package around a qualified tag or inlay and coordinate placement with a specialist technology supplier. Read range, encoding, encryption, platform availability and regional radio requirements belong to the selected electronic system. They must be validated with the actual product, contents, closure and reading device.

Sampling and production acceptance

A decorative mock-up is not enough for functional approval. The sample plan should include the real substrate and finish, production-size codes, intended scanner or UV device, database response and failure cases. Acceptance may cover foil registration, covert response, code readability, duplicate handling, tamper opening, data reconciliation and visual workmanship.

Common failures include security layers being flattened into ordinary artwork, codes printed below usable size, reflective finishes interfering with scanning, labels crossing unsuitable folds, and rejected codes being reintroduced. We prevent these through layer control, material trials, quiet-zone checks, approved placement and a defined reject route.

Quotation inputs and production start
