Gloss and matte contrast places two different optical surfaces on one package so selected graphics appear more or less reflective. The contrast may come from a matte film with spot gloss, a gloss base with spot matte varnish, or compatible coating combinations. The same artwork can look different on coated board, laminated board and dark ink, so buyers should specify the complete stack and approve a physical sample.

Compare the contrast routes

Spot gloss over matte film, spot matte over gloss, paired varnishes and gloss-versus-matte lamination can all create contrast, but they differ in film build, feel, edge quality and later finishing. Raised UV adds height as well as gloss and should not be treated as a flat coating.

The route may be unsuitable where a surface must remain writable, tightly glued, easy to scan or free of rub polishing. A finish name alone does not determine recyclability, barrier or regulatory suitability.

Prepare artwork and substrates

Supply separate vector layers for print, gloss, matte, foil, embossing, cut, crease and glue. Mark registration priorities, trapping or clearance, viewing side and areas that must remain flat.

Provide board, ink or toner, primer, varnish and lamination details. ISO 2813 has a defined scope for gloss measurement; if an instrumental reading is used, state the geometry, substrate and project target rather than copying a number from another job.

Approve the right proof

A PDF or colour proof can approve content and approximate position but cannot reproduce reflection, matte haze, tactile contrast or rub polishing. A swatch on different stock is only a directional reference.

Approve a physical sample using the intended board, inks, contrast route and later converting. View it under agreed lighting, fold and rub representative areas, and retain a master for first-off comparison.

Define production start and QC

Start production only after artwork, material stack, contrast route, sample or proof, quantities, packing and acceptance criteria are approved.

Inspection can cover correct finish, coverage, edge definition, registration, gloss or matte uniformity, haze, scratches, blocking, fold cracking, foil or UV compatibility and glue-zone condition.

Prevent common failures

Contrast can soften when a spot layer spreads, a matte film polishes or the base print varies. Bubbles, silvering, pinholes and poor adhesion can follow rough stock, trapped air or incompatible layers.

Reduce risk with clearances around fine details, compatible surface treatment, clean handling, representative trials and first-off inspection under the agreed lighting.
