Packaging varnish is a clear or lightly tinted surface layer used to adjust gloss, matte appearance, feel or handling over print. It can be applied flood across a sheet or spot in selected areas. Spot matte varnish creates local low-glare contrast, but the visible result depends on the base ink, substrate, primer, coating film, drying or curing and viewing light.

Quick answer

Choose flood varnish for an overall surface effect and spot varnish when selected graphics need contrast. Define gloss, matte or satin appearance with a physical reference; specify the base print and any lamination; provide a separate vector spot layer; and keep varnish clear of glue, seals, codes or folds unless compatibility is demonstrated.

Choose the process from the package

Aqueous, oil-based and UV-curable varnishes have different drying or curing, film build and later-process behaviour. Matte contrast can be created with a spot matte layer over a glossier base or with gloss detail over a matte base. These routes are not visually interchangeable.

Varnish may be unsuitable where a separate film construction is required, where the surface must accept a particular adhesive or marking method, or where product-contact and regulated-use evidence is unavailable. Process names do not establish barrier or recovery performance.

Prepare materials and artwork

Supply the final substrate, ink system and surface stack. Separate spot varnish from print, white ink, foil, embossing, cut, crease and glue. For tight registration, use vector artwork and agree practical clearances around small type and structural features.

ISO 2813 specifies gloss measurement for non-textured coatings on plane, opaque substrates at defined geometries. It can support a controlled method when applicable, but it does not define the correct gloss target or replace visual approval on a converted package.

  • finished package, dieline, substrate and print process;
  • base inks, primer, lamination and existing coating layers;
  • flood or vector spot coverage and finish reference;
  • glue, seal, code, fold and product-contact exclusions;
  • later foil, UV, embossing, cutting and packing exposure;
  • quantity, sample route and acceptance criteria.

Cost categories can include formulation selection, drawdowns or trials, plate or blanket preparation, setup, coating consumption, drying or curing, spot registration, protective handling and inspection.

Approve a representative sample

A digital proof can approve spot shape but cannot reproduce gloss, matte contrast, haze, texture, drying or rub behaviour. A supplier swatch on another print and stock is only a reference.

Approve a physical sample using the intended printed board and varnish route. View it at agreed angles and lighting, compare spot boundaries, rub and fold it, test glue and later finishes, and retain a master.

Define production start and QC

The production clock should begin after artwork, material stack, varnish, sample or proof, quantities, packing and acceptance criteria are approved. A change to ink, primer or substrate may alter gloss and adhesion.

Inspection can cover correct finish and coverage, gloss or matte uniformity, spot registration, haze, streaks, foam marks, pinholes, blocking, setoff, cure, scratches, rub polishing, fold cracking and glue performance. Use instrumental readings only with a stated method and agreed project target.

Prevent common failures

Uneven coating or drying can create streaks, gloss variation, blocking or setoff. Spot edges may spread or misregister. Matte areas can polish under rubbing, and an incompatible surface can cause poor adhesion or later-foil failure.

Reduce risk by testing the exact material stack, defining exclusion zones and clearances, controlling drying or curing, protecting dark matte surfaces and checking first-off sheets with the approved master.

Frequently asked questions

Is spot matte varnish the same as matte lamination?

No. Varnish is a coating layer, while lamination bonds a film to the print. Construction, feel, edges and later finishing differ.

Can gloss be specified with one universal number?

No. The method, geometry, substrate, texture and target must be stated, and visual approval may still be necessary.

Can a PDF approve spot-varnish contrast?

No. It can approve location only. Contrast, haze, texture, drying and rub behaviour require a physical sample.

Should varnish cover glue areas?

Usually use an exclusion zone unless the selected adhesive and varnish combination has been tested and approved.
