Spot UV for Packaging: Artwork, Registration and QC Guide

Spot UV applies a UV-curable coating to selected printed areas to create local gloss, matte or raised contrast. The effect depends on substrate smoothness, inks, primer or lamination, coating type, film weight, curing and registration. Buyers should supply a separate vector coating layer and approve the finish on the intended printed construction because a digital proof cannot reproduce gloss, height or cure.

Use spot UV where selective contrast adds hierarchy without interfering with folds, glue, seals, barcodes or small legal copy. Define whether the target is flat gloss, matte contrast or raised texture. Provide the material and print stack, vector spot layer, registration priorities, physical reference and handling exposure before quotation.
Choose the process from the package
Spot UV over matte lamination can create strong gloss contrast, while spot UV over coated paper or varnish may look different. Raised UV uses a heavier or structured deposit and needs wider design allowances than a flat coating.
It may be unsuitable on absorbent or rough stock without preparation, across tight folds, in glue areas or where cracking and rub exposure are unacceptable. Product-contact or regulated-use suitability belongs to the exact coating and package design.
Prepare materials and artwork
Supply the spot layer as final-scale vector artwork, separated from print, foil, embossing, cut, crease and glue. Avoid hairlines, tiny reverses and exact edge-to-edge alignment unless demonstrated capability supports them. Add trapping or clearance based on the production route.

- finished package, dieline and substrate;
- print, primer, varnish or lamination stack;
- vector spot-UV separation and total coverage;
- flat, matte, gloss or raised effect reference;
- registration relationship to print, foil, folds and cuts;
- quantity, sample route, packing and acceptance criteria.
Cost categories can include artwork correction, plate or screen, coating trials, setup, coating consumption, curing, registration control, extra drying or handling and inspection. Raised or finely registered effects may require more trials.
Approve a representative sample
A PDF proof approves placement only. A printed colour proof may omit the production surface and cannot show gloss, height, orange peel, pinholes or cure.
Approve a physical sample with the intended substrate, print, primer or lamination and spot coating. View it under agreed lighting, rub and fold representative areas, and check alignment with small graphics. Retain a master for production comparison.
Define production start and QC
The production clock should begin after artwork, material stack, coating type, sample or proof, quantities, packing and acceptance criteria are approved. A change to lamination, ink or coating coverage can require another trial.
Inspection can cover correct coating, registration, gloss or texture, edge definition, pinholes, fisheyes, orange peel, blocking, cure, scratches, cracking and contamination. Instrumental gloss methods apply only within their stated scope; appearance acceptance should remain tied to the approved package sample.
Prevent common failures
Poor wetting can create pinholes or fisheyes, while coating spread can soften edges. Incomplete cure can cause blocking, odour or poor rub behaviour. Registration error becomes conspicuous around small text or narrow borders.
Reduce risk by preparing compatible surfaces, simplifying tiny shapes, allowing suitable clearances, confirming cure and checking first-off sheets before full production.

No. A PDF can approve location, but gloss, height, texture, cure and surface defects require a physical sample.
Does spot UV work on every matte lamination?
No. Film treatment, coating chemistry, age and process conditions affect wetting and adhesion. Test the exact combination.
Can spot UV cross a fold?
It may crack or change the crease. Keep it clear unless a representative converted sample proves the design.
Is raised UV the same as embossing?
No. Raised UV builds a coating layer; embossing forms the substrate with tooling and can affect the reverse side.
