Screen Printing for Packaging: When to Use It, Artwork and QC

Screen printing transfers ink through open areas of a stencil held on a mesh. It is useful when packaging needs opaque spot colour, a controlled specialty ink deposit or printing on a surface that does not suit a conventional sheet-printing route. It is less suitable for artwork dominated by fine photographic detail, frequent version changes or economics that favour another process.

Quick answer

Choose screen printing for a defined effect, not simply because it can print on many materials. Confirm the actual substrate and surface treatment, ink system, colour opacity, artwork detail, print location, cure route and later converting steps. Approve adhesion and appearance on a representative sample before production.

Decide whether screen printing fits the job

The process uses a separate stencil or screen for each printed separation. A squeegee moves ink across the screen and through the open image areas. Mesh, stencil, ink, squeegee, off-contact, substrate support and curing all influence the result.

Screen printing can be suitable for bold graphics, spot colours, high-opacity white, metallic or other specialty effects, and selected printing on formed or unusual surfaces. It may be unsuitable when the design requires continuous-tone reproduction, very small reverses, extremely fine text, rapid artwork changes or a large image area better served by offset, flexographic or digital printing.

Identify the substrate and surface

“Paper,” “plastic” or “coated board” is not a complete substrate specification. Identify the exact material, coating, film, corona or other surface treatment if relevant, and whether it will be printed flat or after forming.

Ink adhesion can fail even when the first print looks acceptable. Surface contamination, mould release, low surface energy, coating incompatibility or insufficient cure can cause peeling or weak rub resistance. A production sample should represent the actual material batch and surface preparation.

Prepare artwork for a stencil process

Supply vector artwork for logos, text and spot shapes. Separate each ink colour and identify required opacity. Keep cut, crease, glue, barcode and functional zones on distinct non-printing layers.

Fine positive lines, small reversed text and narrow gaps can close or break depending on mesh, stencil and ink deposit. Halftones require a controlled relationship between artwork ruling, mesh and process capability. Do not copy minimum sizes from another supplier or substrate without confirmation.

  • artwork separated by colour and effect;
  • target colour reference and opacity;
  • print location, orientation and maximum image area;

  • later coating, lamination, forming, filling and packing steps;
  • product-contact or regulatory requirements needing separate evidence;
  • proof or sample route; and
  • adhesion, rub and appearance acceptance needs.

Cost categories can include artwork separation, screen and stencil preparation, colour matching, ink change, fixtures or substrate support, makeready, curing, wash-up, material trials and inspection. Reusing a screen or fixture depends on artwork, condition and production setup.

Approve the right proof

A digital colour proof can approve content and approximate colour but does not prove opacity, ink deposit, texture, adhesion or cure. A drawdown or printed swatch can compare ink and substrate, but it may not reproduce the final geometry or production equipment.

For critical work, approve a physical print on the intended substrate using a representative ink and cure route. Check the sample after the time and handling conditions defined for the project. If the sample uses substitute material, document the limitation.

Define production start and QC

Production should begin after artwork, substrate, ink route, colour, screen strategy, sample or proof, quantities, later processes and acceptance criteria are approved.

Inspection can include:

  • correct artwork and orientation;
  • colour and opacity against the approved master;
  • edge definition, pinholes and fill-in;
  • registration to the package and other effects;
  • adhesion after the agreed conditioning;
  • rub, scratch or handling resistance using a project-defined method;
  • cure, odour or set-off concerns where relevant;
  • contamination, streaks, mesh marks or uneven deposit; and
  • performance after folding, forming, filling and packing.

Avoid treating a fingernail scratch as a universal test. Define a repeatable method that represents the package’s actual handling risk.

Prevent common failures

Poor adhesion can result from the wrong ink, unidentified surface treatment, contamination, incomplete cure or material variation. Pinholes may relate to dust, screen condition, ink flow or surface wetting. Filled detail can come from excessive deposit, unsuitable artwork, stencil condition or process setup.

Colour variation can follow ink mixing, deposit or cure differences. Misregistration may increase with substrate movement, fixtures, multiple colours or alignment to converting. Prevention requires controlled files, identified materials, representative sampling, first-off approval and periodic comparison to the approved sample.

Is silk screen printing different from screen printing?

In modern commercial use, the terms usually refer to the same stencil-printing principle. Current screens commonly use synthetic mesh rather than silk.

Is screen printing suitable for photographs?

It can reproduce halftones, but artwork, mesh, stencil, ink and process control must be designed together. Another process may be more suitable for fine continuous-tone images.

Does a digital proof approve screen-print ink adhesion?

No. It approves content and approximate colour only. Adhesion and cure must be tested on the intended surface.
